Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters welcome ( including ones I haven't written but might know about...)

Well, lets go with the obvious first: Anakin

Obvious, hmmm? ;-).

*Will definitely help me write him a bit in the RR-verse, as he's not quite the same, what with different circumstances, but he is still Anakin.*

1. He's very protective of the ones he loves. Quite obviously. It's only heightened by the loss of his mother in AOTC -- it's not just having her die in his arms like that (although that's bad enough), but it's also the fact that he feels if he had been quick enough to save her (i.e. if he'd left earlier), it wouldn't have happened. I think it's what drives his behavior in ROTS -- next time, he's not going to be "too late" to save anyone. It especially drives when he shows up at the Chancellor's office in ROTS -- I don't think he would have been there if he hadn't thought he was condemning Padme to death.

2. Despite his bouts of teen angst and other things, he's fundamentally a friendly soul, and has great affection and empathy for other people -- left over from when he was a boy. It shows most in the Expanded Universe, with his interactions with the clone troopers, for example.

Not to mention having a quite wicked sense of humor -- for example, the bridge scene with General Grievous, as well as the meadow picnic scene with Padme, etc. He can also be quite a Deadpan Snarker as well ("Under the circumstances, I'd say the ability to fly [the INVISIBLE HAND] is irrelevant."). He's not as snarky as Obi-Wan (who pretty much makes snark into an artform), but he's pretty good.

3. Despite what some would claim to be arrogance, it's really a mask for his insecurities, i.e. not feeling like he's good enough to be a Jedi. The REVENGE OF THE SITH novelization definitely goes into it, at the very least. It also shows in places such as, say, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, during his breakdown after killing the Sand People (it's not just an "Oh Force, I just nearly wiped out an entire tribe" thing; it's also the fact that he killed out of anger. Where Padme saw someone in more need of compassion than anything else, Anakin no doubt saw the seeds of his fall to the Dark Side, or at least his failure as a Jedi).

4. Despite whatever problems he has with Obi-Wan, he genuinely loves and looks up to him, as when he says, "Obi-Wan is a great mentor -- as wise as Master Yoda and as powerful as Mace Windu" and referring to Obi-Wan as being like a father to him on one occasion. Not to mention the fact that he's saved Obi-Wan's life more than once, as well as saying that the whole INVISIBLE HAND mission was Obi-Wan's idea, and he wouldn't have gotten far without him -- in short, he quite likes Obi-Wan, really. Obi-Wan cares deeply about Anakin too, but he's slightly troubled in terms of showing it.

5. Anakin is actually quite cunning/creative when you really look at it. From commandeering the reek on Geonosis to landing the flaming half of the INVISIBLE HAND, he's not just incredibly brave and determined, but also quite clever and creative. Even after he became Vader and had to be put in the armor, he still managed to adapt to it.

I couldn't agree more with all of this. I would only point out that you don't have to make much effort to see Anakin's cunning and creativity.

I definitely agree. And thank you. :)

You're welcome! :)

It's some Star Wars fans that willfully refuse to see Anakin as the cunning guy he's supposed to be. :\
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
Yeah. *Sighs* I guess cunning is a point of view, but still... *Shrugs*
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
Maybe. *Sighs* I just frankly want to know what they were expecting with the whole "cunning warrior" angle, TBH.
From: [identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com
Someone more like Palpatine (the master of cunning, for sure)... except good, perhaps? Ehm, somehow the two ideas don't sound like they'd work well in one individual, but... *shrugs* People are weird.

That or a complete and utter Gary Stu, maybe. Honestly, I think that option's probably the one they were rooting for. (Sorry, is Miss Bitter today)
From: [identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com
Yeah, or that. Don't worry, I'm always Miss Bitter when it comes to fandom's reaction to Anakin.
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
That's reassuring -- I suppose. :) *Sighs*

Still, at the very least, we Anakin fans know the truth, don't we? :)

Leia Skywalker Organa Solo

1. Though Leia's a kind soul, like her father, she has very clear boundaries between "I forgive you" vs. "I'm not putting up with this shit" -- at the very least, towards her enemies. It's a quality she also shares with her mother.

2. Leia is not only a warrior at heart, but also a diplomat. Like her mother, she balances both aspects smoothly.

3. Leia is less hot-tempered, really, than iron-willed. She has very clear boundaries of what's right and wrong, as well as what she will and won't tolerate (which is one of many reasons she takes a while to warm up to Han). Think Belle from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Generally a very friendly soul, but doesn't suffer fools gladly.

4. Like her father before her, Leia has a very snarky sense of humor -- albeit slightly more acidic. Think, for example, the failing hyperdrive scene in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

5. Leia's also highly compassionate. Consoling Luke, for example, after Ben is struck down by Vader on the First Death Star.

Since Leia and Anakin have already been mentioned, Luke Skywalker. :)

*Prays I got it right, at least*

All right then. :)

1. For all people say he takes after Padme, he also takes a lot after Anakin. His love of flying, his skill with flying, the Force, what-have-you, not to mention his great empathy and affection for other people. But he does also have some of Padme's traits, such as attempting to compromise before attacking as well as her more forgiving nature.

2. He also has his father's cunning and creativity, such as hurling a grenade inside an Imperial walker, as well as the entire plan to get off Jabba's sail barge.

3. He also has a bit of his father's snark and wit, such as how he behaves around Palpatine (in a sense). In short, he takes a lot after his father.

4. He's willing to give other people a chance -- Han, for example, in A NEW HOPE, and later Vader in RETURN OF THE JEDI. And with Vader, I can also see it is trying to work out the idea of how such a good man like Ben and Yoda described could have become Vader. I can imagine that once he learned more about his father's history, it made him pity his father more than ever before.

5. Like his father, don't threaten his loved ones. It never ends well.
