Not doing this in any particular order, given that the Snowflake Challenge is pretty flexible, fortunately.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. Write more original fiction

2. Take better care of myself -- I'm not exactly the best at taking care of myself, and I'd like to change that.

3. Build self-confidence.

4. Work on my Star Wars Rewrite Verse some more. If I can complete my version of Episode IX, that'll be something.

5. Do well in school.

6. Read more books.

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I decided to do a fanmix, which I haven't done in a long time. This is really just a sample of stuff I associate with the Ben/Kylo and Poe ship, so I haven't really covered everything. In terms of theme? Well, I guess angst. Because if there's one of many things this ship is about, it's about the angst.

In which I am predictable... )

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The Force Awakens — First got into it when I was going through some rough stuff and I just fell in love with the characters, the emotion in there, and the compassion. (Even Kylo gets his moments, believe it or not!) Back then, I was mostly seeing Star Wars as an obligation and fully intended to leave fandom after seeing TFA, but TFA definitely dragged me back in. I think it was the scene with Finn and Poe stealing a goddamn TIE fighter that made me start thinking, “Goddamn, this movie is awesome”, and the compassion in it sealed my fate as a TFA fan. Maybe I’m not a “true” Star Wars fan because I prefer TFA over even the other eight films, but you know what? I’m fine with that.

Doctor Who — Influenced a ton of my writing, again, because of the compassion there. There’s a wonderful scene in “Last of the Time Lords” where the Master is cowering from the Doctor, and the Doctor embraces and forgives him. It’s a genuinely touching moment, and something we don’t often see in media. Moffat’s Doctor Who isn’t bad, but the compassion in RTD’s Doctor Who made it a favorite of mine. In a way, some of my better qualities and influences come from watching this show.

Star Wars in general — Because it introduced me to great characters, great stories, beautiful worlds, and influenced my writing definitely for the better.

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Original fiction or fanfiction:

Sympathetic villains — What can I say, I’m a sucker for that trope. It really makes the story even more powerful because the villain seems all the more real.

Strong female characters — I grew up on that stuff. Seriously. They really helped me through the tougher aspects of growing up.

Fanfiction:

Ben and Poe being friends and later lovers — You can blame TV Tropes for this one. And AO3. Let’s say that they really persuaded me towards the idea. I just love the idea because it’s something we’ve never seen before in Star Wars, and could be really unique.

First Order Poe — Because I think it would be interesting to see what it’s like if Poe were on the opposite side. Usually that lines up with Kylo/Poe. (Yeah, I know)

Role reversal — Because I like exploring what character X would do in character Y’s situation. Character development, plot development...yowza. It’s awesome!

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The Last Jedi Rewrite. I genuinely think I did a good job on this. There are some things I would change, some characters I’d put into the spotlight more, but I think in terms of it being my TLJ rewrite, I did a good job.

The Broken Edge. My pre-TLJ backstory for Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. I think I did a decent job on this, and really grew to adore this version of Ben Solo.

Practice Dance. Just some shameless Poe Dameron/Ben Solo fluff, set pre-Ben’s fall. (I write a lot of that. I guess I just like fleshing out Ben’s past) This was difficult to come up with, but in the end, I have to say I like the end result.

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Right now, I’ve fallen in love with the book Fangirl. Not only is it kind of inspiring me to write (I’m thinking that if the main character can do what she does, why not me?), not only is it a unique premise (about a fanfiction writer), but the characters are great, the emotional moments for the most part work, the humor for the most part is really funny, and the romance is incredibly sweet.

Day 7:

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

I declare this my love meme post.

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, that’s a tough one. I’d say that James Scott Bell’s writing books really taught me all I need to know about writing. There were definitely others, but his were pretty big influences on my writing. Especially recently.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

Man, this is pretty tough. But I guess what I want is this.

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Jump by Zoe_Dameron. Basic plot is Kylo coming to the Resistance, and how Poe deals with it. Everything in here is perfect — the characterization, the emotion (believe me, I prefer her slap scene to what we got in TLJ because there’s much more weight and emotion to it), even bits of bonding between Poe, Finn and Rey...it’s all gutwrenching and absolutely perfect.

Babysitter Ben by EsmeAmelia. This is just so sweet, and really showcases the bond between Ben and Rey perfectly. Much, much better than canon, IMHO.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi by ladygabe. A lot of people are trying their hand at TLJ rewrites, but this? This is perfection. Special kudos to her (?) portrayal of Snoke, who comes off like a real character instead of a cartoon villain, and her portrayal of Leia.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Christ, so many memories. Chatting about KOTOR with darth_eldritch, for example. Everything I’ve experienced with MidgardianNerd. such as when she wrote a fanfic based on a fanfic I wrote her for my birthday: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11698821. (You might know MidgardianNerd from when I did my post on Darkpilot; she wrote The First Day of the Rest Of Our Life, which I recommended for anyone who wanted to dip their toes in) And also, when she wrote her stories based on my own fantasy AU for TFA: http://archiveofourown.org/series/856572. Seriously, go read her stuff; she is an excellent writer) *

And this is pretty recent, but it touched me enough to include it — someone actually recommended my stories to someone looking for good Darkpilot fics. It’s one of those things that just meant the world to me. Honestly, any memory where I’ve moved someone with my stories somehow really just rocks because it means I’ve done something right. I do love my audience dearly.

* And thing is, when she first commented on one of my deleted scenes for The Broken Edge, I was fangirling on the inside. Just sort of like, “Oh my God, she commented on my work, this is so cool!” Because she was very much a regular in the fandom that I was writing in, for Ben-Kylo/Poe. We kind of kept up a bit of a correspondence through my fics before I reached out to her on Tumblr and we got to know each other better.

Talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and how the challenge has affected you.

Mostly I’m participating in the snowflake challenge because I had a lot of fun with it last year. In terms of how it affected me, it inspired me to get going on my Kylo Ren backstory, The Broken Edge, and helped me make new friends. I’m glad I participated, I really am. (And honestly, if I hadn’t gotten inspired, I wouldn’t have met the people I did in the TFA fandom, which is awesome. So...domino effect!)
