Top Five I Wish Had Better Development/Writing

1. Vestara Khai. Seriously, poor girl deserved a hell of a lot better than what she got.

2. Ana Steele from Fifty Shades of Gray. I mostly heard about it via the recaps on das_sporking, but let's say that yeah...she needed a lot better development and writing than what she got.

3. Nora Gray from Hush Hush. Mostly heard about it via zelda_queen's awesome sporkings of the books, and yeah, she was a major victim of bad writing and development.

4. (This is not going to win me any fans) Rebecca Stone from Demo Reel, mostly regarding the (MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING HERE) molestation backstory that just comes right the fuck out of nowhere. I'm not opposed to handling difficult subjects like molestation, but the way it was handled here was so clumsy and tasteless. When it comes to something like that, you have to treat it with a certain amount of delicacy, skill, and tact, and this wasn't one of those moments. That and she wasn't exactly a three-dimensional character overall. I mean, she had good action moments, etc., but she didn't really grab me. She felt incredibly flat, and with the tacked on backstory about molestation that was handled so poorly...yeah, she deserved a better writer/at least better handling of her character for this shit. (I know this isn't going to win me any fans in the slightest. I know some are going to disagree. It was just something that was bothering me for a while, so I needed to get it off my chest)

5. Jarael from the KOTOR comics. Even hearing about how poorly the writers handled her...yeah, she definitely deserved better writers.

Fair enough. I mostly agree with 1. and 5. but that's also largely because I mostly know about 1. and 5., but I can sympathose from how the rest sound.

Thanks!

Both you're welcome and thanks. And yeah, 2-4...I don't think I even scratched the surface of how bad they are. And Jarael and Vestara...if they'd been in the hands of better writers, they could have worked, but yeah, not really, unfortunately.

You could always give them a shot ;)

I reckon I can vaguely see why 2. is problematic, if only because of all the flack the book's received. Even so...

Maybe. :)

Just out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on the whole 50 Shades thing, at least from what you heard?
From: [identity profile] coldthermistor.livejournal.com
Honestly, no real thoughts because I haven't read it and seldom see things in relation to it. I've heard criticism that they're not really in a safe sort of relationship and that Ana is way too willing to let Grey get away with all sorts of things, but that's about it.

Well, that's definitely good. I haven't read the book necessarily and I could be completely wrong about it, but the few excerpts I read (and the play-by-play analyses) made me go, "Well, this is a whole lot of nope." Especially in terms of, as you mentioned, the unsafe relationship (which, from what I read, is kind of a case of "what not to do" if you're in the BDSM scene). I think das_sporking and a lot of people more expert than me covered most of what's wrong with the book (and its sequels) though.
