Reblog if it’s okay for your followers to leave you an ask telling you what the one thing is they remember you for as a writer. Is it a scene or a detail or a specific line? Is it something like style or characterization? Is it that one weird kink they never thought they’d be into, but oh my god wow self-discovery time?

Dear horror fandom,

Thanks for being there for me back in 2013. After everything I experienced, it was just really cool to get into a more laidback sort of mood. You have an amazing sense of humor; some of the stuff you post is absolutely hilarious (even if it means that I may never look at certain characters with a straight face ever again), and you've gotten me into things I didn't think I would get into otherwise. Stuff like the Halloween franchise which, when I felt that things got really bad, honestly helped me through some tough times. (And gave me awesome new characters to love, like Laurie Strode, Jamie Lloyd, and so on) It sounds like an odd choice to help someone through bad times, but for me, it gave me something to get excited about and to get involved in. And that's what I needed most. Getting into Stephen King, too, helped me through some tough times. And discussing the books on Reddit was a joy in the roughness that was 2016 -- just talking about how underrated The Tommyknockers is, for example, and gushing over how awesome Alan Pangborn is (because he's one of the coolest characters King has written) was fantastic.

You write fantastic meta as well -- I know that one bit of meta about Rob Zombie's Halloween II actually summed up why I love the film (yeah, I know). And this little piece about Halloween 4 and 5. Just to name two. If you go searching for good horror meta, you'll find quite a few gems. And your videos! By God, when you get creative, you are absolutely fantastic.

So, in short -- thank you, horror fandom. You've brought a lot of good memories here and have really helped me through some rough patches. And for that, you are awesome.

There are quite a few things that meant a lot to me in fandom, but I remember that in 2011, just discussing stuff like KOTOR with [personal profile] darth_eldritch and many others was one of my favorite memories. I think there was something about just discussing the matter of KOTOR, our favorite characters, finding fellow fans, and getting to rant about the retcons that Dark Horse and Bioware were making (plus having some appreciation for the minor characters like Lieutenant Grenn) that was just really fun. I admit I miss those days, and it's one of those reasons I am admittedly sad about KOTOR being made non-canon. There are admittedly things in the old Legendsverse that I'm glad aren't canon anymore, but KOTOR I am actually sad is noncanonical. Then again, I think not all hope is lost -- they did bring back Thrawn, so hopefully, a KOTOR resurrection is not too far in the distant future. (Plus, the design of Kylo's armor had to come from somewhere. It's not completely like Revan's but it shows some influences)

But yeah, just chatting about KOTOR, hanging out at kotor_legends, writing KOTOR fanfic...that was one of my favorite fandom memories.

In your own space, post a rec for fannish spaces and resources - comms, challenges, twitters, tumblrs, etc. Tell us about where you hang out. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I mostly hang out on Reddit for this sort of stuff. Stuff like r/stephenking is pretty awesome, along with r/horror. For Stephen King and/or horror fans on my f-list, those are pretty awesome places to look. Reddit in general I say is pretty good for this stuff, as you can type in just about anything fannish and there's probably a subreddit for it. And Dreamwidth is pretty good for this stuff too. There was also the LJ group kotor_legends, although unfortunately I think it's abandoned. I miss that comm. It was just really neat talking KOTOR with other people.

And there will probably be more communities as I get to them. I just realized I haven't been hanging out in many fannish communities as of late. Maybe it's time to change that.

Day 11
In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my favorites is EsmeAmelia. I mean, her characterization is probably her biggest strength here, especially her characterization of Han, in my opinion (I mean, I struggle with Han quite a bit, so her portrayal of him is just really good. Inner monologue, dialogue -- especially since I worry about making Han sound like he swallowed the dictionary -- just about everything, honestly) is one of my favorite characterizations in fanfiction. And her other characterizations, such as Anakin (she writes him with a lot of sensitivity and grace, IMHO), Leia, Ben, and many others are just really well-done. (She writes tiny Ben too with a lot of sensitivity and grace, and an understanding of how kids act. He's written so endearingly that I really didn't want anything bad to happen to him, even if what happens to Ben Solo is very much a foregone conclusion) And she also writes about characters that don't get much attention as well -- C-3PO actually gets his own piece during the mindwipe in ROTS and it's actually really sad.

And now for the recs!

A Baby Changes Everything -- Just a really adorable holiday fic. The interactions between Han, Leia and Ben are really cute, the reflection on Leia's childhood Christmases (or fetes) on Alderaan prior to its destruction were a nice bittersweet touch (EsmeAmelia's look at how Alderaan's affected Leia is actually very realistic, and wrenching), and baby Ben is just adorable.

What Winning Means -- Ben's characterization is just golden here. From his funnier moments, such as splashing water on Han to wake him up (and later splashing Leia just to stop the two from fighting) to his more serious (for his age) moments such as his guilt over an action he takes on Han and Leia's behalf to help them win, Ben is a very well-rounded younger character.

101 Moments -- Because this really displays her skill with characterization. From character to character, everyone is smoothly portrayed, well-rounded, and handled with empathy. Her Anakin bits are the highlights and, believe it or not, actually feel like they could fit into canon really smoothly, but every story is wonderful to read.

Mind Wiped -- Turns a moment from canon that's not often touched on into a really disturbing, heartbreaking story. The backwards chronology really adds to the poignancy of the whole thing.

And these are just a few. Seriously, go check her stories out! She is an amazing writer.

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Jeez, this is a tough one. I haven't gone into fanfic tropes, like, ever.

But I guess I can talk about a trope that I've found that's kind of a pattern in my stories and in the stories I read, and that's emo-porn/emo-kink (thank you, Fanlore). I think the first time I realized I liked it was in stories that I read as a kid, stuff like The Odyssey (yeah, I read that book when I was a kid. Cliff's Notes actually helped me) when I was just reading about the sheer crap Odysseus went through just to get home. (Seriously, talk about The Chew Toy!) And from there I just went on to find some really strong emotion in stories and in fics. I think the thing about emo-kink/emo-porn is that when it's done really, really right, you feel like you're right there with the characters, feeling what they feel, experiencing what they're experiencing. And I guess that's what I want my readers to experience; I want them to experience that whole come-with-me feeling, I want them to laugh, cry, I want them to care about the characters. And I think when you just get that sweet spot that emo-porn/kink has, you've really done something right.

In terms of recs:

Star Wars: Tempest by lupinskitten. Does a beautiful job at getting into Kylo Ren's head at a pretty pivotal moment in TFA.

Echoes in Eternity by coldthermistor. Not gonna lie, this one gives me a lot of feels regarding the Revan and Malak friendship that was drastically mishandled, IMHO, in canon.

Talen by HeCallsMeHisChild. Just a pretty gutwrenching backstory for Ursula the sea witch, and really gets into her head very well.
