Is it something like style or characterization? Is it that one weird kink they never thought they’d be into, but oh my god wow self-discovery time?

Dear horror fandom,

Thanks for being there for me back in 2013. After everything I experienced, it was just really cool to get into a more laidback sort of mood. You have an amazing sense of humor; some of the stuff you post is absolutely hilarious (even if it means that I may never look at certain characters with a straight face ever again), and you've gotten me into things I didn't think I would get into otherwise. Stuff like the Halloween franchise which, when I felt that things got really bad, honestly helped me through some tough times. (And gave me awesome new characters to love, like Laurie Strode, Jamie Lloyd, and so on) It sounds like an odd choice to help someone through bad times, but for me, it gave me something to get excited about and to get involved in. And that's what I needed most. Getting into Stephen King, too, helped me through some tough times. And discussing the books on Reddit was a joy in the roughness that was 2016 -- just talking about how underrated The Tommyknockers is, for example, and gushing over how awesome Alan Pangborn is (because he's one of the coolest characters King has written) was fantastic.

You write fantastic meta as well -- I know that one bit of meta about Rob Zombie's Halloween II actually summed up why I love the film (yeah, I know). And this little piece about Halloween 4 and 5. Just to name two. If you go searching for good horror meta, you'll find quite a few gems. And your videos! By God, when you get creative, you are absolutely fantastic.

So, in short -- thank you, horror fandom. You've brought a lot of good memories here and have really helped me through some rough patches. And for that, you are awesome.

There are quite a few things that meant a lot to me in fandom, but I remember that in 2011, just discussing stuff like KOTOR with [personal profile] darth_eldritch and many others was one of my favorite memories. I think there was something about just discussing the matter of KOTOR, our favorite characters, finding fellow fans, and getting to rant about the retcons that Dark Horse and Bioware were making (plus having some appreciation for the minor characters like Lieutenant Grenn) that was just really fun. I admit I miss those days, and it's one of those reasons I am admittedly sad about KOTOR being made non-canon. There are admittedly things in the old Legendsverse that I'm glad aren't canon anymore, but KOTOR I am actually sad is noncanonical. Then again, I think not all hope is lost -- they did bring back Thrawn, so hopefully, a KOTOR resurrection is not too far in the distant future. (Plus, the design of Kylo's armor had to come from somewhere. It's not completely like Revan's but it shows some influences)

But yeah, just chatting about KOTOR, hanging out at kotor_legends, writing KOTOR fanfic...that was one of my favorite fandom memories.

In your own space, post a rec for fannish spaces and resources - comms, challenges, twitters, tumblrs, etc. Tell us about where you hang out. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I mostly hang out on Reddit for this sort of stuff. Stuff like r/stephenking is pretty awesome, along with r/horror. For Stephen King and/or horror fans on my f-list, those are pretty awesome places to look. Reddit in general I say is pretty good for this stuff, as you can type in just about anything fannish and there's probably a subreddit for it. And Dreamwidth is pretty good for this stuff too. There was also the LJ group kotor_legends, although unfortunately I think it's abandoned. I miss that comm. It was just really neat talking KOTOR with other people.

And there will probably be more communities as I get to them. I just realized I haven't been hanging out in many fannish communities as of late. Maybe it's time to change that.
