I was so saddened to hear this first thing this morning. He led a good long life with great acting accomplishments, but naturally we wanted him around longer.
He really did lead a good life. And his acting -- I remember stuff like Harry Potter, Dogma and Galaxy Quest and he was amazing. And I'm definitely going to miss him.
Same here. I remember seeing him in stuff like Dogma and the Harry Potter movies and Galaxy Quest, and he was amazing. And from what I heard, a really awesome guy!
With the passing of Alan Rickman, David Bowie, and Brian Bedford (the voice of Disney’s Robin Hood), all around the same time and all due to cancer, this is a very sad start to the new year. :(
It was a surprise to me because I didn't even know that he and Bowie had cancer. It's such a shame. Alan Rickman was such a remarkable actor with such a unique voice, and he will be missed.
Brian Bedford's dead? Damn...I remember watching Robin Hood as a kid. It was one of my favorite Disbey movies and he did beautifully. And yeah, it really is a sad start to the year.
And I didn't either. It's just really sad. And he really was -- plus, from what I heard, he was pretty groovy off-set. I remember seeing him in stuff like Harry Potter, Dogma, Galaxy Quest and Love Actually and he was amazing. And he really will be missed.
And you watched Dogma too? That's really, really awesome! I actually watched Dogma last year and it was wonderful. Alan Rickman really was one of the best parts. :) I might have to also rewatch the 2010 Alice in Wonderland as well as Die Hard.
Yep; rewatched Dogma recently in fact! Rickman made the show for me, and it's still true despite first watching in 2006.
You know how Doctor Who fans talk about their Doctor? Well, he was my Metatron; that's how I see the Metatron, ever since. Snarky, grouchy, prissy--but compassionate. It's saying something that I prefer this depiction even to Good Omens.
Pfft, just rember to rewatch Wonderland shortly before In The Looking Glass comes out ;) For maximum enjoyment!
He really did! He's definitely one of my favorites in Dogma -- along with Rufus, Bethany, Bartleby, Loki (I know it sounds weird to mention him and Bartleby, but I do have a soft spot for those two. They're very well-rounded villains), Azrael, Jay and Silent Bob, Serendipity, etc. There's definitely something about him in the role where he had so much class and dignity and...well, just plain awesomeness. (Plus some amazing lines. "Oh, Bartleby. Was Wisconsin really that bad?" *Giggles*)
Same here. :) I mean, I can't say that I've seen other versions of the Metatron, but I have a feeling they wouldn't measure up to Rickman. And I think "snarky, grouchy, pissy but compassionate" really sums up Metatron in Dogma amazingly well. I know that his talk with Bethany after she has a breakdown on learning of her true heritage was one of the best scenes in the film. (I'll be honest, I wanted more scenes of Bethany and Metatron because they played off each other beautifully)
And yeah, considering that the sequel's now coming out, it's even more of a reason to watch it. :) Hopefully it's lurking around on Netflix somewhere...
I could live with the whole movie being Bethany and the Metatron--oh, wait. I felt he worked well with God too, at the end. That one was good. (Apparently, Wisconsin was that bad, and where else do you get Rickman dropping his pants, dear god?) His scene with Bethany and her breakdown was easily my favourite part of the entire film.
Definitely liked Bartleby, Loki, Rufus, Bethany, etc. Jay and Silent Bob, I didn't enjoy so much, but I understand it's Kevin Smith's signature, so eh. I agree they made the film, but they didn't entirely interest me.
He really did! God is another one of my favorite characters from the movie. And yes, where else would you get Rickman dropping his pants? (I remember one behind-the-scenes bit where Rickman actually seemed pretty tickled by that scene, especially the model of it. And yeah, Wisconsin really was that bad. XD Poor Loki and Bartleby. XD)
It was definitely one of my favorites. Another one was the parking lot scene where Bartleby finally just *loses* it. One of Ben Affleck's best performances, in my opinion.
Honestly, I think it would have been easier to name the characters I *didn't* like. And that would probably be the Stygian Triplets. They were creepy. The rest of the cast was just excellent.
S'all right. :) I can definitely see where Jay and Silent Bob would get grating at times.
Man, I remember watching him in Galaxy Quest years and years ago, and he was so good. I watched it again a few years back, and while not everything still holds up, Rickman's performance definitely does.
He was also one of the best things about the largely mediocre Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie from the early 2000s, as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android.
I don't remember much about the Hitchhiker's movie, but yeah, he was amazing in Galaxy Quest. He got some of the best lines, and some of the best dramatic moments. And it really was sad news.

Warning: Dogma fangirling in general ahead
