Part One (STAR WARS)

Date: 2013-09-22 07:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
My favourite character: Anakin Skywalker.
My least favourite character: The Jedi Order. I guess it was Lucas' intention, but there were times when they just bugged me.
Most attractive character: Anakin, Padme.
Funniest character: C-3PO, Han Solo, R2-D2.
A character I would kill off/remove: Really can't think of any.
A character I would bring back: Padme, Anakin, Qui-Gon, Shmi.
5 ships I like: Anakin/Padme, Han/Leia, Qui-Gon/Shmi, Luke/Callista, Han/Mara. (Last from the EU)
A random thought: I really need to get around to watching the movies again. It's been too long. Also, Episode VII cannot come soon enough.
An unpopular opinion: I really don't think Jar-Jar Binks is that bad. Also, I think Anakin's the real hero of the STAR WARS films.
My canon OTP: Anakin/Padme
Non-canon OTP: Obi-Wan/Sabe.
Most badass character: Anakin, Palpatine, Dooku, Grievous.
Pairing I am not a fan of: Obi-Wan/Padme. I just see them more as buddies.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): In the EU, Luke. I guess it was just...canon!Luke wasn't perfect, but he was generally a good guy. In the EU, though, it feels like he Took A Level In Jerkass. Also, Obi-Wan in some episodes of CLONE WARS.
Favourite friendship: Anakin and Obi-Wan. They have a really interesting dynamic, really.
Favourite thing about the canon universe: I think it's definitely the epic scope of it.

Part Two (Doctor/Rose)

Date: 2013-09-22 07:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
When or if I started shipping it: I don't know, really; I think it was just seeing it in "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" (let's say I first watched DOCTOR WHO in anachronic order; yes, I know how weird it is) and "Doomsday" pretty much solidified it. At least that's as far as I can remember. But yeah, from what I saw of it, I was just sort of, "Yep, that's it. That's the ship."

My thoughts: It's just an amazing ship in general. The banter, the sheer chemistry between them, the sweet moments, the silly moments, the sad moments...it's just a perfectly written ship.

What makes me happy about them: Where do I start? I mean, for starters, she made him better. When he was lost and hurting, she helped him. Not to mention just how much fun they had together -- I know stuff like "Tooth and Claw" comes to mind, when they're laughing on the floor of the TARDIS.

What makes me sad about them: "Doomsday". Enough said.

My favourite scene with them: So many, but I think my favorite, as heartwrenching as it is, the beach scene in "Doomsday". First off, the acting between Billie Piper and David Tennant is just perfect. Second off, there's bits of absolute adorableness in there, such as when Rose goes, "I can't think of what to say!" and the Doctor just laughs -- that and the look in his eyes is just...gah. http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=49247&fullsize=1. And the music. And just...all of it. I also love when they're just running across the street to each other in "The Stolen Earth" -- well, before that damn Dalek showed up. http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lieayd43C51qfl9mro1_500.gif

My least favourite scene with them: Probably their argument in "Father's Day". It's like...I understand why, but it was one of those rare moments I disliked Nine.

The biggest challenge to their relationship: Well, the matter of him being a Time Lord and her being a human, for one thing, which he points out in "School Reunion".

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I think it's whenever the authors invoke Die For Our Ship -- people like Martha, Reinette, etc.

Things I look for in fanfic: Just good writing, good AUs, in-characterness, the essence of their relationship (e.g. the banter and the fun that they had), etc.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: For the Doctor, I'd go for Martha, Donna (yeah, I was initially uncomfortable with the idea because I see Martha and Donna better off as his buddies, but I'm coming around to otherwise), River, the Master, or Jack. For Rose, I'd go for Martha or Jack.

My happily ever after for them: Personally, I would have loved the idea of Rose not nearly falling into the void in Doomsday and continuing to travel with the Doctor.

What I think will happen with them in the future: I definitely know I can't wait for the fiftieth!

Part Three: Hermione

Date: 2013-09-22 07:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
How I feel about this character: She's a good character, she really is. Kind, funny, clever...all that good stuff.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I really didn't mind Emma Watson's portrayal of her in the films.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I can't say. Although I remember reading the books and thinking that she would end up with Harry sometime in the future when I was younger.
My het ship: Draco/Hermione, Harry/Hermione.
My fem/slash ship: Ginny/Hermione, Luna/Hermione.
My OTP: Hermione/Draco.
My OT3: Harry/Ron/Hermione.
My non-romantic OTP: Harry/Hermione.
My anti-ship: Not necessarily an anti-ship per se, but Hermione/Ron. I don't know; their bickering in the books, while probably meant to be a sign of sexual tension, just really made me uncomfortable while reading.
A headcanon fact: I know that whenever I wrote her in my fanfics, I always sort of had her be a fan of the LORD OF THE RINGS books. I don't know; I think she'd love those books. And I think that even as a child, she'd be pretty dang precocious, really -- she's already very smart, after all.
A scene/moment that sums up this character: I think her first appearance in SORCERER'S STONE, not to mention SPEW -- I think the fact that she was so dedicated to liberating the house elves is just amazing, really.
An idea I have for the character that I haven't written: I was thinking of a What If story of Hermione being the Chosen One, not Harry. Just sort of a whole always-been-there sort of thing. I might actually get around to writing it sometime.

Part One (Lord of the Rings) (part a)

From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
(Awesome! Have fun)

My favourite character: Oh dear God, so many. Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Boromir (especially film!Boromir; he was just adorable in the movies), Faramir, Arwen, Eowyn, Bilbo...Tolkien just has way too many great characters.

My least favourite character: In the books, Saruman, Wormtongue (though the films are a different story; I think Peter and co. made him more sympathetic, in a sense), Morgoth, Turin (I felt sorry for him, but I also just didn't get him), and Ar-Pharazon.
Most attractive character: Arwen, Frodo, Galadriel.

Funniest character: Merry and Pippin. And in the films, Gimli. He was just awesome.

A character I would kill off/remove: I honestly can't think of any.

A character I would bring back: Frodo, so very much. Also, Boromir and Gollum.

5 ships I like: Frodo/Sam (they were actually one of my first slash ships. I think it might have started when I was reading the books in middle school), Aragorn/Arwen, Eowyn/Faramir, Beren/Luthien, and Frodo/Boromir.

A random thought: I really need to get around to reading the books again, I mean, Jesus Christ. They were pretty much the shit when I was in middle school. I remember just lying on the couch before school began (my middle school was all on one floor, let's say) and just reading them (although I remember always skipping certain parts to get to the Frodo parts. XD). And watching the films for the first time. Just that sort of sense of awe and wonder that you got from the films -- I know I definitely wanted to be, amongst other things, a screenwriter when I finished the films.

An unpopular opinion: I really didn't mind them making Arwen's role bigger in the movies. Seriously.

Part One (Lord of the Rings) (part b)

From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
My canon OTP: Aragorn/Arwen, Beren/Luthien, Eowyn/Faramir.

Non-canon OTP: Frodo/Sam.

Most badass character: Probably Eowyn.

Pairing I am not a fan of: Not a big Aragorn/Legolas person. I don't dislike the pairing; I'm just sort of indifferent.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): While overall I think they did a fantastic job with the movies, I really didn't like how Denethor carried over in the films. I know the Nostalgia Critic summed it up just hilariously and awesomely in his Top Eleven Dumbest Lord of the Rings moments (video here in case you want to watch: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/39894-nostalgia-critic-top-11-dumbest-lord-of-the-rings-moments). My whole take on it is that you have this guy who, in the books, is a generally decent person who's just going through this horrible thing -- he's still grieving after the death of his wife and older son, and spiraling into madness thanks to looking in the Palantir. He's misguided, yes, but he's not awful. In the movies, though...oy vey, he's nearly irredeemable. I think something that no one else really points out is that throughout the movie (at least while he's still there), Pippin and Faramir sort of treat him like he's still the sort of book character -- basically, the generally good person going through this horrible thing -- which really leads to a lot of weird sort of dissonance like, why the hell are they being nice to this complete and utter bastard and trying to please him? I've kind of grown to appreciate him a bit more thanks to the behind the scenes stuff and Peter Jackson and co.'s commentary (and John Noble's -- that and even though movie!Denethor was mishandled, John Noble still did a great job), but...yeah. I love you, Peter and co., but you really could have done better there.

I think it's especially glaring because they handled a similar character, Boromir (who was I admit kind of a Jerkass in the books), wonderfully, turning him from a sort of Jerkass to more of a Jerk With A Heart Of Gold -- I know stuff like him comforting Frodo in Lothlorien after Gandalf's death was a good one (and fuck, I should really just write a whole essay about Boromir, because I have a lot to say), and him sparring with Merry and Pippin -- heck, I think he was one of the nicest characters in the movies, period. (And I think TV Tropes might have described him once as "everyone's older brother", which I think sums him up really well) The films just handled him so well as this sweet, empathetic, noble but troubled young man who really just wants to make things better for Gondor and his father and all and just really messes up -- and they handled things pretty well with Faramir too, I think; even with his whole near-Ring-slip (which I actually didn't mind), he's still another one of the nicest characters in the films. But Denethor? They just made him into a complete jerk. I mean, I love the films, but Denethor was just really disappointing.

Favourite friendship: Pretty much all the bonds between the Fellowship. Also, in the films, Merry and Eowyn, and Boromir and the hobbits. I've always had it as a bit of headcanon that in the films, the hobbits and Faramir are sort of Boromir's Morality Pets; they're mostly there to help his gentler, kinder tendencies, especially considering that on the inside...he's a genuinely good person, but he also sort of struggles with the darkness of the Ring and all. (Which I think is good. I think Boromir might have actually sort of jumpstarted my love for that character. I always find these characters fascinating, especially since...well, I know 2013 seems to be the year that I'm struggling with my darker side as well. Just generally feeling angry a lot, and sad -- so yeah, those characters always sort of hit close to my heart)

Favourite thing about the canon universe: Where do I start? Great emotional moments, poetic language, great characters, great moments of humor, a really rich sort of mythology...it's just perfect.

Part Two (Eleven/River)

Date: 2013-09-22 08:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
When or if I started shipping it: I think it was with my first episode, "A Good Man Goes To War". That and I found the very idea of them really honestly intriguing.

My thoughts: They're just amazing! They're definitely my second favorite pairing, and I only say second favorite because Doctor/Rose is definitely my number one.

What makes me happy about them: Just their dynamic. Their banter, their flirtiness, how well they play off each other -- that and Alex Kingston and Matt Smith work really well together.

What makes me sad about them: Just how it ends. It's just really sad.

My favourite scene with them: So many! I know that the scene in "A Good Man Goes To War" when she calls him out is a favorite because of how emotionally affecting it is, as well as when he finally finds out who she is. That and when she gives up her remaining regenerations to save him, when he forgives her when she's about to shoot him, as well as her subsequently managing to disable her weapons (and yeah, it did put all of creation in jeopardy, but I think her intentions were genuinely good), her confession to him (and just...oh River. You really don't know how much he needed to hear it, especially considering how much he genuinely hates himself. Just a reminder that he is indeed loved by so many, especially her), their talk on the beach in "The Time of Angels", "Never let him see the damage" in "The Angels Take Manhattan"...honestly, Eleven and River have a shit ton of genuinely affecting scenes.

My least favourite scene with them: Honestly, I can't say.

The biggest challenge to their relationship: The whole "spoilers" thing, really.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I really can't say. I can't say I've found any annoyances in fanfic yet. (And that's great! Keep up the good work, fanficcers!)

Things I look for in fanfic: Witty banter, flirtiness, character exploration (because there's so much I still want to know about River, I really do), poignancy (because their relationship as a whole is very sad, I think).

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: In terms of River, Rose, Donna, Jack (thank you, Russell T. Davies!), or one of her archaeology team members. In terms of the Doctor...anyone goes. Seriously, anyone. Rose, Martha, Donna, The Master, Jack, Astrid, Reinette, Clara...anyone.

My happily ever after for them: After Eleven regenerates, I love the idea of him being preserved in the Library with River so they can live out the rest of their days together.

What I think will happen with them in the future: I think scenes of her and Twelve are very likely!

Part Three (Nine) part one

Date: 2013-09-22 08:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com
How I feel about this character: I really didn't like him that much at first, but he eventually grew on me. Honestly, he's kind of like Boromir, I think -- a genuinely good person who's grappling with this horrible thing. In Boromir's case, it was the Ring; in Nine's case, it was his role in the Time War and his Survivor's Guilt. But really, when he's not grappling with that, he's a genuinely regretful, loving, compassionate, and even kind of optimistic character also, who's more than willing to do what it takes to save humanity as well as the woman he loves.

So yeah...I adore this character. <3

My unpopular opinion about this character: I think he's a very underrated sort of character. I also don't think he's that awful/dark; I remember getting into an argument with someone else who didn't like him just because "the Doctor's polite even when he's being rude" (mostly regarding his tendency to tell people to shut it), which really, first off, I don't mind that much. It's rude, yeah, but I kind of like that Nine has character flaws that he sort of gets over as Season One progresses. And I like the idea that they took the Doctor into darker territory to begin with -- the fact that he went through hell, and thus he changed in more than one way. This previously (mostly) light, happy character becoming this broken man haunted by the Time War (and made worse by why he had to do it, because Rassilon had gone mad. Imagine having to destroy your own people to stop them from destroying creation. It's just heartbreaking) no matter how he tries to hide it by pretending everything's okay when it's not. And yet there are times when his previous selves sort of shine through. For example, The Doctor Dances, and his just...joyous reaction when Jamie returns to normal:
http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=18318&fullsize=1
http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=18320&fullsize=1

There's just something like that where it reminds me of his vibrancy as Eight in the Doctor Who TV Movie (yes, I watched the TV movie, yes, I actually kind of liked it. It got cheesy at parts, but overall, it was an enjoyable movie):
http://i31.tinypic.com/2s180sh.jpg

It's one of those moments that becomes doubly poignant because it's almost like, for a moment, bits of who he was before the Time War are coming back again. And over time, they do. I think Rose helps, really. More than just a bit.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he'd gotten more than one season. He was *fantastic*.

My het ship: Nine/Rose, no questions asked. Though I have a fondness for Nine/Lynda as well.

My fem/slash ship: Nine/Master. I would have loved seeing them interact. Also, Nine/Jack.

My OTP: Nine/Rose. I love their dynamic, I love how she makes him better, I love their banter and moments of humor...I don't think there's anything about them I don't love.

My OT3: Nine/Jack/Rose.

My non-romantic OTP: Nine/Jabe. Seriously. Also, Nine/Jack and Nine/Jackie.

My anti-ship: Nine/Jackie.

A headcanon fact: I think Nine's initial persona (assuming that John Hurt!Doctor is indeed the Doctor who fought in the Time War) was sort of born out of his actions in the Time War. The Doctor's personas as a whole might have banished John Hurt!Doctor because his actions were too terrible to admit. I doubt any of them could ever truly admit "I did this." I think it might have also been why he hesitated after the Dalek's "You...destroyed us?" in "Dalek" -- the sort of "I'm a monster" sort of feeling. That and I think it might have also explained his actions in "Dalek" a bit as, besides leftover hatred for the Daleks for what they did, it might have been, for Nine, easier to hate the Daleks and possibly himself (as well as just fake-smile through certain things) and it really takes Rose to help him heal.

I also think Nine's kind of the Anti-Nihilist because, I think for all the pain that he suffered, he really does want to help people. TL;DR, I think my characterization/perception of Nine can really be summed up in this quote: http://i.imgur.com/nXJ0dGp.jpg

A scene/moment that sums up this character: In terms of dramatic scenes, a lot of "Dalek", I think; for example, his conversation with the Dalek about what happened in the Time War, as well as his almost Ahab-esque rage towards the creature. And when Rose convinces him to put his gun down and not shoot the Dalek. There's something about the way Christopher Eccleston says, "They're dead. They're all dead." that's always affecting. It's almost like the grief, guilt and loneliness are finally crashing down on Nine. Not to mention when Jabe comforts him in "The End of The World" about his people, and he cries: http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=3466&fullsize=1

And on lighter notes, things like any time when he's with Rose, any time he smiles (this, for example: http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=3895&fullsize=1), him comforting Charles Dickens, and his goodbye to Rose. "You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I!" (Yeah... ;.;) And "coward, any day". Because when he could have pulled that lever and killed Daleks and humans alike, he *didn't*. I think it's one of the most noble moments of any character in all of fiction, not just DOCTOR WHO, and I wish we had that stuff more often.

An idea I have for the character that I haven't written: I really need to get back to that 'verse where Eight didn't immediately regenerate after the Time War (this was obviously before the John Hurt!Doctor reveal in "The Name of the Doctor"), and Nine sort of lived out the Tenth Doctor's episodes. That and him surviving "Parting of the Ways" and continuing to travel with Rose. And perhaps the missing adventures, like some of what Rose mentioned in "Boomtown".

My favourite character: River Tam, all the way. And from the BDM, the Operative.
My least favourite character: Honestly, I can't think of any. Except maybe the Hands of Blue, and that one guy in the "Heart of Gold" episode, but they were meant to be villains. Also, the Reavers. I remember just seeing a clip from Serenity where they just attack this woman in the hologram, and I couldn't sleep for days. I think I remember sleeping with the light on worrying about the Reavers coming to get me. They were pretty much my boogeymen, really. (That and their origin is probably one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen in film)
Most attractive character: Inara, River, Mal.
Funniest character: Jayne, Wash.
A character I would kill off/remove: Can't think of any.
A character I would bring back: Wash, Shepherd Book. (Seriously, Whedon, that was just not fair at all)
5 ships I like: River/Jayne, Simon/Kaylee, Mal/Inara, Zoe/Wash, River/Kaylee.
A random thought: If there are parallel universes out there, there has to be one where Firefly lasted for more than one season, and I want to go there just to see it.
An unpopular opinion: Can't really think of any at the moment.
My canon OTP: Wash/Zoe. They're just so adorable. <3
Non-canon OTP: River/Jayne.
Most badass character: River, Mal, Shepherd Book, Zoe -- let's face it, Serenity is just full of BAMFs.
Pairing I am not a fan of: River/Simon.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Honestly, I can't say. I think Whedon did a really great job overall.
Favourite friendship: River and Kaylee, Kaylee and Inara.
Favourite thing about the canon universe: I really love how they took the heroes and the villains and chose to show them in shades of gray. I know the Operative is one of my favorite characters if only for this -- because he shows that the Alliance really isn't evil (it's sort of shown in "Bushwhacked" when they have to form an Enemy Mine with Mal and co. in regards to the whole Reavers thing); they genuinely believe that they're doing the right thing. Unfortunately, let's say that their definition of the right thing involves, amongst many things, cutting up an innocent girl's brain to make her a supersoldier. And I think there's something about villains/antagonists who think they're doing what's right that's just goddamn terrifying.

Also, I love the characters, the emotion, the dialogue -- goddammit, I really need to get around to watching Firefly again. It's been too long. I remember it was just the *shit* when I was younger.
