Don't let the title fool you; it's actually a very interesting editorial about superheroes and how to write them well. I think...well, I've learned a hell of a lot about writing today. Thanks, Nostalgia Critic! :D

Date: 2013-07-09 07:36 pm (UTC)And yeah, I know what you mean. Superman's supposed to be so cheery and upbeat; that's really what differentiates him from Batman. Superman's more Lighter and Softer and Batman's more Darker and Edgier. (At least, from what I saw)
I think Doug in the Sibling Rivalry for Man of Steel sort of said something along those lines -- they turned Superman into Batman and Batman into Superman (in a way). And yeah, one really doesn't need to turn Superman into a Batman clone to make him interesting, or make him Darker and Edgier. Just...well, tell his story, really. (Besides, I think we've had our surplus of Darker and Edgier movies, and even said Darker and Edgier movies that came out in 2013 had their humorous moments, e.g. IRON MAN 3, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, etc. * Really, why not something a bit Lighter and Softer; after all, Lighter and Softer doesn't really equal bad.)
But yeah, balance is definitely key. :)
* Which, really, I think you need humor because...well, too much darkness and the audience gets exhausted. Lightening the pace is always a good way to go.
