(Warning for a bit of run-on sentences for the first one) -------
Obi-Wan has heard many stories about the Lord Darth Vader, stories about him making while armies all but turn and flee from him, and looking into those eyes, he cannot deny it. This man is completely dangerous, and not just that, mad -- even if one could argue that there is a strange sort of brilliance in his madness. But if nothing else, there is something in his eyes, so vulnerable, so very hopeful and lonely at the same time even behind that madness, that makes at least a part of Obi-Wan wonder if this is really the monster he's been warned about.
If one asks in the end why he left the Order and became one of the Lost Twenty One, there are so many reasons, but one that stands out the most is her. Because if nothing else, though Obi-Wan once told him that the Jedi were his family, Anakin has never truly been able to believe it. Here on Naboo, with Padme, his wonderful wife and their beautiful children -- not to mention Ryoo, Pooja, Sola, Jobal and Ruwee -- they are the closest he has ever felt to actually feeling as if he's come home.
I've never been an Anakin/Padme shipper myself but I know that you are, so I'm glad you decided to do both! :D I kind of feel sorry for Obi-Wan that Anakin doesn't at least count him as family, but it's lovely to see Anakin actually belong somewhere... it was a tragedy of the films (and Anakin's and Padme's admitted silliness about the whole thing) that he was constantly caught between wanted to be a Jedi and wanting a loving family. Great work!
And yeah, poor Obi-Wan. :( I think Anakin does count him as family also, but the Jedi Order in general...well, he's lost a degree of faith in them. Naboo, really, feels like the sole place he really belongs.
And I definitely agree with you there, about Anakin wanting to be a Jedi vs. wanting a loving family. (And Anakin and Padme) I think it's one of the saddest parts of his character, really.
Yeah, the Jedi were kind of like their own massively dysfunctional family, but not one that Anakin could ever feel like he was part of. I think Obi-Wan was really torn about that: he wanted to be Anakin's family, but his indoctrination by the Order prevented him from reaching out or accepting someone else. :( My poor bbs...
It is sad! And it's sad because Palpatine used that to manipulate him...
And that definitely makes sense regarding Obi-Wan. He loved Anakin dearly, but he didn't really know how to express it because...well, Jedi teachings. (And sort of doing so long with just doing what he's told, being a good Jedi, etc.). And by the time Mustafar comes around, it's too late. Poor Obi-Wan, and poor Anakin. *Hugs them both*
Aw man, Palpatine's manipulation of Anakin is one of those parts that gets me the most. :( Just the way he sort of slowly broke Anakin down like that. I think there's just something about Anakin's story in general that breaks me, but Palpatine's manipulation stands out amongst many.
Aargh, those two boys! It's just so saaaad. *tear* Obi-Wan loved Anakin but his darn reservedness and his need to be the perfect Jedi got in the way. One of the biggest tragedies is that they just didn't understand each other. *sniffle*
It was a very clever manipulation - Palpatine played on Anakin's fears, weaknesses, and twisted his strengths. It's one of the reasons I find Palpatine such a fun villain to play around with! I love writing him manipulating other characters and events to his benefit. :D
:D :D :D Oooh! I love it. :) Fascinating take on it! I love AUs where Obi-Wan doesn't meet Anakin until he's already Lord Vader, but there are so few of them out there! And I love the hints of this one, that Anakin isn't completely the monster people say he is, and Obi-Wan sees that... potential for a friendship there after all! Great work!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. :) And yes, I think the idea of Obi-Wan not meeting Anakin until he's already Vader is a pretty awesome idea as well.
I enjoyed it greatly! I'm ever intrigued by the possibilities of Anakin and Obi-Wan meeting as adults. Potential for a more equal relationship/friendship? ^_~
When Luke thinks of Vader, he typically thinks of the stories that Ben Kenobi has told him -- the stories of the man who was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force, the man who killed his real parents before Ben had to take him in for his own protection -- and he thinks of what he has seen of Vader: the towering figure dressed all in black, with a voice so deep that it could echo through your very bones.
But when Luke meets Vader on Bespin, if nothing else, though some of what Ben has warned him about is true (pragmatic, skilled in combat in spite of his armor limitations, tenacious, cunning, ruthless), a krayt dragon lunging to catch its prey, there is something about Vader that feels far too familiar -- almost as if Luke has known him, in a sense, longer than he could have thought possible.
But it can't be -- and yet that feeling continues to niggle at him, that feeling continues to persist throughout the duel, and it doesn't let up no matter how much Luke tries -- and he cannot help but wonder, in the end, who Vader really is, and why he keeps feeling as if he's known him before.
