...and it was really very excellent! Loved it.
First of all, it was really very good seeing Craig again. He was always one of my favorites since I saw him in "The Lodger" (and honestly, he would make a very good full time companion) so seeing him back again was a joy. I really liked the way that he worked with the Doctor, and I really liked his interactions with his son, Alfie. I also really loved Alfie in general -- he was very endearing and very funny, and I loved some of his scenes with the Doctor, such as the Doctor showing him the stars outside, as well as...well, a lot of the Doctor's interactions with him. He, Craig and Alfie played off one another really well -- I loved scenes such as Craig and the Doctor investigating and some of the mishaps that came with the job. It was very, very entertaining to watch. Also, the matter of Craig breaking free from his cyber conversion and helping the Doctor blow up the Cyberman ship if only because of his love for Alfie. (Also, much love for the Doctor calling the Cybermen "metal morons". Seriously) Not to mention one scene with Craig and the Doctor talking about his upcoming death at Lake Silencio -- it very nicely sort of mirrored the conversation between Ten and Wilf in the cafe in "The End of Time". Except for Eleven, it's arguably worse -- it's not the matter of death and regeneration, it's actual honest-to-God dying. (Or so it seems at the time) I don't think it's a stretch to think that he's more than slightly afraid.
Speaking of the matter of the Doctor's death, Madame Kovarian and the Silence showing up to take River away was absolutely terrifying. Just the way Kovarian appears out of seemingly nowhere, and her utter glee at the idea of forcing River to kill the Doctor. Also, the matter of the Silence showing up. It was nice to see them again, really, in a bizarre way. And it's also heartbreaking for River (then again, I think she has one of the saddest stories in DOCTOR WHO, and that's saying something) because in a way, it's as if she can't escape her destiny. She has to kill the Doctor, even though doing it...well, it would break her heart. And it's one of those moments where I can see some parallels between River and the Master -- they're not completely the same, but both were used as children for the ends of others. Kovarian...I can't really see her reason outside her utterly loathing the Doctor, and perhaps, her devotion to the Silence. Rassilon just wanted to save his own skin. Kovarian -- I think it may be her devotion to the Silence, and the matter of "silence will fall when the question is asked", but even that's undermined by how...gleeful she is. She isn't someone wounded by the Doctor, or doing her duty, or a woman weighted down with the burden of what she has to do -- she's gleeful about what she's doing. The woman may have her twisted justifications for what she does, but underneath all that, she is purely evil.
Not to mention the ending with River drifting underneath the water while that old nursery rhyme is playing...that was very chilling and very haunting, and very well-done. I also loved the matter of the Cybermen -- they were very frightening. I know stuff like the Cybermat that attacked the Doctor and Craig was very frightening, as was the teaser with them killing one of the workers. Also, the fact that they were randomly abducting people. That was also chilling.
I also loved the cameo of Rory and Amy. I will admit that it broke my heart, but at the same time, seeing them was definitely a joy. And the Petrichor ad: "for the girl who's tired of waiting". That was also very heartbreaking. And the Doctor, near the end, saying to his TARDIS, "Well then, old girl. One last trip?" That was very sweet. Also, Craig giving the Doctor the cowboy hat. Honestly, this episode was amazing. Only problem? When it ended.
So overall? Definitely recommend this episode.

Date: 2013-04-16 01:48 am (UTC)I completely agree about Craig - I LOVED to see him again and I'm hoping for his return even if it doesn't seem likely at this point.
It felt like it was a bit of comical relief before the more 'serious' episode - I really enjoyed it! :)
