Apr. 9th, 2013 09:37 pmSo, today's been a mixed bag, for what it's worth. On the one hand, I got a B on my most recent psychology test (and thank Jesus, I say), and I got to rest for a bit. On the other hand, let's say that I got into an argument with my dad (though we did make up later), my computer needs to be fixed (and I am really worried about losing my files), and oh yeah, I'm paying for not getting enough sleep. So yeah...
On the bright side, I watched "The Almost People". Overall, pretty fucking amazing.
First off, I have to say that the ending with Amy turning out to be a Ganger -- though I knew it was going to happen, that didn't make it any more hard-hitting. From Ganger!Amy having contractions to Eleven having Rory step away from her (and Rory's reaction. Very human), to Ganger!Amy's confusion, to the utter Nightmare Fuel and even sort of What The Hell Hero of Eleven vaporizing the poor ganger (and maybe that wasn't the intention on the part of the episode, but that's how I saw it). Oh yeah, and the ganger thing...it's going to pay off later. In a pretty big way. Not to mention the sight of real Amy and Madame Kovarian (also known as the Eyepatch Lady), and Madame Kovarian just...crooning at the poor girl to give birth and such, what with "You're ready to pop, aren't you?" and such...and ugh, this is getting Nightmare Fuel inducing.
(And kudos to Frances Barber for damn good acting) Here's drunken STAR TREK humor: http://cheezburger.com/7255895296.
*Sighs*
Seriously, poor Amy just got put through hell at the hands of Kovarian and the Silence. Add in that bit in "Asylum of the Daleks" in regards to what happened to her, and...yeah. I say Kovarian no doubt got what she deserved in "The Wedding of River Song". It would be one thing if Kovarian was a Well-Intentioned Extremist, but...she's not. She's...well, monstrous. Highly intelligent, yes, but monstrous. One can appreciate her, but I doubt there's any defending her.
*Sighs*
Christ, this is getting depressing again. Here's a picture of a kitty: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Cat-MaineCoon-Cookie.png.
But besides the amazing cliffhanger with Kovarian and the real Amy, I really loved the matter of the Ganger and the human war. I loved how Ganger Jennifer's own ganger (yeah, long story) went too far -- after all, getting vengeance on the humans who mistreated the Gangers, that's understandable. But fake!Ganger!Jennifer takes it too far. She wants to wipe out pretty much all of humanity. Humanity's attitude towards the Gangers is rather contemptible (and even Ganger!Amy -- she doesn't know she's a Ganger. Long story -- gets in on the act. Which I admit was really uncomfortable), but at the same time...well, it doesn't really warrant those sort of tactics. As another character said, "Look at you, Jen. You were such a sweet kid. Look at you now. The stuff of nightmares."
I also loved the matter of the Ganger Doctor. I think he was actually one of my favorite characters in the episode. Seriously. I love how he interacted with his real self, and his freak-out in regards to Amy talking about his imminent death (she means his death at Lake Silencio, but the Ganger Doctor thinks she means him getting melted down, and...well, he freaks out. It's really frightening to watch, and Amy...well, she understandably wants to keep her distance from him). Not to mention when he's going through all his previous regenerations. His first regeneration, for one thing. And his third regeneration. And his fourth. And his tenth (although there's a bit of a gut punch with "We've moved on!" Also, later, the matter of equating John Smith to, basically, nobody. Let's say that in the context of "Human Nature/Family of Blood"...yeah, here's this moment. And here's things that are okay. *Knocks "this moment" past "things that are okay".* Do I need to say more? *). And when he and the other Ganger sacrifice themselves to stop the double-Ganger-Jennifer (who seems to have mutated into some sort of Richard Lazarus creature), he says, "Geronimo." Seriously, fucking awesome scene. And though it is gutwrenching (as Ganger Doctor was really lovable), it...well, it definitely warms the heart. Not since "The Big Bang" has a catchphrase been used with that amount of pathos.
I also loved Rory discovering what happened to the seemingly useless flesh. That was horrifying (especially considering how they were left to rot while fully conscious) and gutwrenching (yes, I am fully aware that I am using that phrase a lot. Sorry) at the same time. And...well, I have to agree with Jennifer's comments in that scene, about who the real monsters are. It's really one of those episodes that proves that human cruelty can be scarier than any monster. Seriously, the Midnight creature? Creepy enough. The humans' behavior in that scene. Even scarier. The Silurians? Most of them were kind of awful -- except for the leader, who seemed to be one of the only ones willing to actually fix the situation -- but Ambrose's behavior? Terrifying. ** And so on and so forth. And even when the humans aren't being terrifying, the Doctor is, such as "The Runaway Bride" and "The Waters of Mars". *** And I loved the other Gangers (not Amy, really) deciding to have the company stop what they were doing. I also loved Eleven saying that, fundamentally, humans are good. Because we really are, in the end. And I loved that one ganger bonding with his son; that was a lovely scene. Honestly, the whole episode was amazing. Only problem? I'm really frightened for Amy. I always knew what was going to happen, but...yeah.
* Seriously, a really good scene, but gutwrenching.
** And the worst part was that I could understand. After all, her grandfather is mutating and the Silurian prisoner with them is refusing to help him -- all on the basis that he is human and thus unworthy. And her son -- he's been kidnapped and well...possibly being dissected. (He isn't, of course, but she doesn't know that) I mean, yes, Ambrose killing that Silurian prisoner was awful, but...I just feel kind of bad for her. (I know. I am...apparently very odd)
*** Also a bit odd that the two examples I cited had something to do with water. With "The Runaway Bride", it was Ten making the horrific decision to drown the Racnoss, and the matter of the crew being made into water monsters in "The Waters of Mars". Although there is the matter of fire in the episode, such as the base exploding, and when Ten makes his choice to go back to the base, it...well, look at how it's shot: http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=112411&fullsize=1. Very phoenix-like. And when he enters the base: http://www.the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=112433&fullsize=1. Yeah, pretty...Does This Remind You Of Anything, wouldn't you agree? It's sort of showing what's happened to the Doctor, mostly via invoking certain imagery (the phoenix, etc.) in a purely ironic context. Ten's always portrayed as a sort of Messiah figure, but it's always a sort of flawed one. (And given RTD's other work regarding that, "The Second Coming" -- which I recommend because it is awesome -- that's not the first time he's done it. A bit odd, really) But yeah...odd that in both "The Runaway Bride" and "The Waters of Mars", water seems to equal not just death, but a revelation of the Doctor's darker side as well. Fire as well, though it also means rebirth. (Also, sorry I keep going off on these tangents -- and possibly overanalyzing, but it isn't possible that they just chose all this just to look cool, really -- but I keep seeing these little connections and I can't ignore them.
So overall? Awesome episode. Definitely recommended.
