Guh, having ear problems really fucking sucks. :/ So anyway, my brother's come back, so we got a double feature of both "Blink" (still very much holds up. I mean, I love the characters, I love the dialogue, I love the plot, and...well, it's just one of my favorite episodes. Helps I also have a bit of a thing for horror, but well-told horror is also good) and "Flesh and Stone". Let's say that jumping from Ten's era back into Eleven's era was quite the transition, but still...loved it. Seriously, loved it.
First off, the Weeping Angels held up as well as ever. And though I know some people complained about the "changed" rules for the Angels, personally? I think they made sense. The Weeping Angels in "Blink" were no more than scavengers. These Angels are a hell of a lot smarter and a hell of a lot stronger. Of course some of the rules would be...tweaked a bit. That and they're pretty intelligent creatures. Of course they would find new ways to adapt in order to get their energy fix.
Not to mention...actually, the only thing I really object to about them is how they go against what was established in "Blink", about the whole "most benevolent killers in the universe" thing, basically. Here? They're fucking sadistic. They may talk politely, but they're cold-blooded monsters here. I mean, they use a dead man's communicator in order to talk, make Amy count down to her death just for shits and giggles, even start *laughing* when the crack appears (BTW, scariest sound ever. Well, it's in the pantheon of scary sounds -- there's still the matter of the Midnight creature, the Vashta Nerada, and the Toclafane. Oh yeah, and "Are you my mummy?" Doctor Who: providing free nightmare soundtracks since 2005!), and...oh yeah, the kicker? They try and have the Doctor throw himself into the crack (because either they haven't seen "Turn Left", or they give no fucks whatsoever. Definitely the latter) even though it will wipe him from all memory and existence. (And it definitely makes sense, the whole "Remember what I told you when you were seven" thing) They were very well-done, really, but at the same time, I was like, "Kindest killers in the universe, my eye." (They do have very good manners, I guess. At least in speech) Although they had some funny bits, like the Doctor making them say "comfy chairs".
And on the subject of the crack...goddamn that was terrifying. I know that it swallowing those poor soldiers was really unsettling, especially when Amy starts questioning one of the (previously) surviving soldiers about his teammates, and he doesn't know what she's talking about. Brrrr... (Yeah, there's something more "brrrr" than the Weeping Angels. Time to start checking my wall and make sure there aren't any cracks in it. Thanks, Moffat! /sarcasm)
That said, there were some sweet moments in there, like the Doctor reassuring Amy, as well as the Doctor and River's chat at the end. Also kind of sad, in a way, and very good on the foreshadowing. I also loved the Doctor deciphering the whole "base code" River showed him earlier, and, on a more awesome note, the Doctor sacrificing the Weeping Angels to the crack. To quote a certain Donna Noble, I bloody love you. (Same for River beaming Amy to safety in time)
I also loved the building of tension with Amy walking through the field of Weeping Angels, and, later, Father Octavian's death. I loved Matt Smith's acting there; there's just so much emotion expressed in those eyes. And Octavian ultimately choosing to face death with dignity. Honestly, it was a brilliant episode. Only problem? When it ended.
So overall? Loved it. Definitely recommended. :)
