Let's say I took the opportunity to watch a bit of THE PHANTOM MENACE. Still holds up very well, I say. True, there are a few groaners in the dialogue (e.g. "They must be dead by now. Destroy what's left of them." I can understand checking to make sure they're dead, but let's say the statement was a little too self-contradictory for my tastes), but at any rate, it's good to see the PT gang together. Padme in all her awesomeness, for example, and Qui-Gon also in all his awesomeness. And Obi-Wan was cool as ever -- it helps that Ewan McGregor is always awesome. :3 Not to mention that I've got some degree of solace that even though the rest of the 3D conversion will have to wait in favor of working on the sequel trilogy, there's always the BluRays. Although admittedly, I don't like the thought that TPM didn't break the blockbuster box office count if only because of...well, that much disappointment over THE PHANTOM MENACE. I dunno; I think there could be worse prequels to something. Still, I think I'll no doubt badly paraphrase Captain Archer from ENTERPRISE and say that a prequel or sequel is something, whether it is in the chronology, before or after the original film, that no one is truly happy with. * (No doubt especially in the case of prequels) But still...good to get back to watching TPM again. (And no, I don't think the acting was as bad as some have made it out to be. Not even a little)
Also got to see some of the DOCTOR WHO episode "New Earth". I say some because the DVD that "New Earth" was on sadly seemed to have been badly scratched on the far left side. Mom's currently taking it up with Amazon to see if they can get a disc that's not scratched. Still, the episode was pretty good. For example, Cassandra in Rose's body -- Cassandra's despicable, but goddamn is she fun to watch! :D And even a bit pitiable, really, especially at the end. Plus, the Doctor's reaction at seeing the infected humans, seeing the Face of Boe again, and Rose's overjoyed reaction to seeing New Earth. Just...freaking adorable reaction. Billie Piper is just really good in the episode, especially with Cassandra being trapped in her body. While she can get silly, it's intentionally silly, and it never gets too over-the-top. Plus, her sort of imitation of Cassandra's voice was perfect. I also liked how even though the bodysurfing was played for comedy most of the time, there was also a hint of seriousness in it, such as the Doctor being tipped off that it's not Rose because "People are dying and Rose would care" (which I think is a given. Considering that Rose is Miss Chronic Hero's Syndrome -- which is probably one of her most endearing traits, at least from my point of view -- not caring would be kind of a case of Something They Would Never Say. Although, Doc? I think Cassandra's hilariously bad attempts to mimic the way Rose speaks should have also been a tip-off. XD) as well as Cassandra getting a glimpse at how valuable compassion really is. Especially the Doctor hugging one of the cured plague victims. It's really one of many reasons I love the Doctor -- just because of how kind he really is. He's not perfect -- then again, no one ever truly is. One might as well try to think up a square chicken of uniform density or something -- but he's a very kind soul and willing to help others no matter what. Hell, he even tries to save the Master and, of all beings, Davros. I think it helps that Davies doesn't subscribe to the Protagonist-Centered Morality as other works of fiction can occasionally succumb to (e.g. the villains having to look worse so the heroes can look better). I think it's because Davies doesn't shove it down our throats; he just lets the villain's actions speak for themselves. For example, "Doomsday" -- he doesn't shove down our throats the fact that the Cybermen are very removed from human emotions and only understand things such as orders, etc.; it just takes one line from the Cyberleader: "I ordered surrender", and the Doctor's, "You're in their homes, you've got their children! Of course they're gonna fight!" Which works if only because it's born out of the emotion of the Doctor himself, not Davies trying to impart a message. And Rassilon -- we don't need to be told that he's a monster. We see it, in him disintegrating a Time Lady for questioning the matter of the Time War, his plans to annihilate creation save for the Time Lords, his callous treatment of the Master, etc. Not to mention giving them reasons for doing what they do, or at least attempts to justify it to themselves even if the reasons don't hold water.
So yeah, "New Earth". Pretty good. Wish the disc hadn't been scratched, but still...pretty good. How are you guys? :)
* Granted, I haven't watched ENTERPRISE, but that's a good quote. *Sighs, runs hand through hair* And whoever made the original quote Archer was referencing is a very wise man indeed.
