Star Wars Meme, Day Four
Feb. 25th, 2013 06:31 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Guh, stress really sucks. Just to make up for being swamped in the Apocalypse Big Bang (I'll admit that there's been a bit of anxiety, to say the least. 0.0), I'm going to be doing more of the Star Wars meme.
Day 4: Favorite Relationship:
To quote the Tenth Doctor, does it need saying? :P But seriously, it's Anakin and Padme. I just love their story, I love their interactions together, both as children, then older, and then, finally, as husband and wife. And both Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen worked really well with Natalie Portman, I think.
I'll just be presenting you with some of my favorite Anakin/Padme moments (all GIFs used from Tumblr, Fanpop, etc. Screencaps from Moons of Iego, etc.):
The Phantom Menace:
-Their first meeting. Their conversation was really, really cute.

-Showing Padme Threepio. That was a really memorable moment:

-That part in the novelization when they talk with one another during the podrace.

-Sharing a few laughs prior to the podrace:

-Anakin giving Padme the japor snippet. It's a really touching scene -- Anakin consoling Padme, in a way, about Naboo, and Padme consoling him about his separation from his mother:

-Their shared grins in the ending scene:

Attack of the Clones:
-Their reunion. I especially love Anakin's "grown more beautiful" line (oh, Anakin, you are such a dork. <3). And Padme's reaction:
Cutest reaction ever, y/y?
-Their talk prior to the assassination attempt in the novelization. Really adorable, wish it had been in the movie. :)
-Their talk whilst packing.
-Their talk about compassion and such. Also, funny that Anakin has a better grasp of compassion than most Jedi (Yoda, for example. And Obi-Wan. And pretty much every Jedi on the Council in the KOTOR games).
-The meadow picnic scene. Really cute.
-The dinner scene, and Anakin's love confession. Because Anakin loves her, and she loves him, but she's too terrified, in a way, to accept it, and considering how it might jeopardize them both, she's right, in a way.
The hug before Anakin goes to find Shmi:

Granted, it all goes south a lot later, but it's still a very lovely moment. Although I think Padme probably should have gone with Anakin. Why? Because to quote the wonderful and wise Donna Noble, I think he needs someone to stop him.
-Padme comforting him after his explosion of rage in the Tusken camp. It was just really well-done, really.
Padme's love confession:

Because after such a long while of denying her feelings, it's when things look bleakest that she finally confesses to Anakin that she loves him. It's just really well-done; the score, Natalie Portman's delivery...it's all perfect. Seriously.
The battle of Geonosis:
I love their banter there even in the midst of danger. It's so very them, and I love it.
The wedding:
Just a beautifully shot scene. The staging, the music, just...gah, everything:
And I love how the droids were the only ones to witness the wedding. Because they were probably the only ones who the both trusted -- and/or the ones that meant the most to them, among many. (I could be wrong, really)
Revenge of the Sith:
The reunion with Padme:
First off, I love how he just goes running towards her the moment that he manages to get away from Bail Organa, and sort of...wraps her up in his arms and spins her around. Because honestly -- after being separated from each other for a long time (and Padme having to think he was dead...ouch), of course they'd sort of start running towards one another. And Padme's grin really makes it as well:

Not to mention Anakin sort of burying his face in her shoulder, sort of nuzzling, really. And his "I missed you, Padme". It's almost like he's trying to take in the fact that somehow, he's here with her, after all this time. And that smile:

Just...gods. I think that's one of my favorite parts of it. There's a bit of conflict in there, what with Padme's "No, not here" and Anakin being tired of having to keep his relationship with her a secret -- because he loves her, and to him, there's no shame in that. Padme, on the other hand, is worried about her career and Anakin's being jeopardized by this. She's sort of thinking of the long term, he's sort of thinking in sort of emotional terms. (TV Tropes even listed him under The McCoy, one of those moments when their assessment is completely accurate. And it's really one of those areas where I can identify with him, because I myself can be kind of an emotional sort. But I digress)
Not to mention the little touches (hee) such as Padme settling into his shoulder:

And later, Anakin noting the fact that she's trembling. I just love the way he's still holding her, here:

And when she tells him that she's pregnant. Does he freak out or get angry? No. If nothing else, he finds it wonderful, and when she expresses her worry, he says this:
"We're not going to worry. This is a happy moment. The happiest moment of my life."

There's just something about Hayden's delivery that makes it. And both their expressions.Goddammit, you two; stop being so adorable. Seriously, that's probably my favorite part of it. Seriously. And their eyes...
And there's something about this scene on a larger scale that gets me close to breaking down, really, especially when it comes to why Anakin fell. Because he loved her, and he loved their unborn child (or children, as it later turned out). And Padme loved him -- to see Anakin fall like that...well, no wonder she collapsed, in a sense, at the end. It felt almost akin to her whole world ending: the Republic in ruins, her husband going off the deep end...things like that.
The scene on the balcony: First off, I love how Anakin's watching Padme comb her hair while she's talking about a potential future for the baby (or babies):

I think I once mentioned something about that either last year or the year before, but there's just something about his expression that I love. He's just content to listen to her talk, to smile, to sort of dream with him, in a way, about the potential future for their family. He's content to just watch her be alive. I can imagine some of what's going through his head, about, basically, how wonderful it is when Padme does...well, everything. And how wonderful it is to spend more time with her after being away from her for so long.

And on a sidenote, Padme's hair. Seriously, to quote Rose in "Turn Left", she's got some really great hair. I wish I had her hair. And her nightgown. It's definitely one of those scenes where Padme...well, she just seems to glow, really. But back on topic (and probably away from me lamenting my own hair and how short it is now...sorry).
I also love their banter on the balcony; I know some have called it cheesy, but me? I think it's just kind of an Anakin and Padme thing, and that's really what makes it so endearing:

Plus, most adorable expressions ever, y/y?
I also liked her comforting him after he had a nightmare (something, BTW, that I can relate to considering that I've had nightmares myself. Not about people close to me dying, but mostly about stress-related issues. And some of them...yeah, the worst part about nightmares is that they seem so real and it's not until you wake up that you realize how silly some of them are, e.g. one nightmare I had about someone coming across one of my Old Shames), and later, him reassuring her that their baby is a blessing, and not a problem. I know some have criticized the whole "Why doesn't he tell Obi-Wan" thing -- well, here's the thing: Obi-Wan's a good friend, but he's loyal to the Code first and Anakin second. Anakin no doubt fears that Obi-Wan might basically tattle to the Council about the two of them being married and expecting a baby, and though he cares about Obi-Wan a bunch, he doesn't want something like that to happen. I'm guessing that he's figuring that if he has to keep Padme safe, he has to find other ways -- and honestly, he tries. He goes to Yoda -- but of course, Yoda's wisdom is an Informed Ability at best. There's also the matter of him being appointed Master (it's in the novelization, BTW), but they shut him down because they don't trust Palpatine and want Anakin to spy on him (which...yeah, their wisdom is an Informed Ability at best as well). So when it comes to Palpatine not-so-subtly suggesting the matter of Darth Plagueis...well, Anakin is at least considering the possibility. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
I also love them kind of face-snuggling near the end of the scene:

The "hold me" scene:

Both kind of a breather after the earlier Jedi Council stupidity, and also a very human trait. Sort of a case of "Let's just pretend this isn't happening, let's pretend we're back in happier times." After all, Naboo may not have been in the most peaceful of times, but for Anakin and Padme -- this wasn't just a place to hide while Obi-Wan investigated the matter of Kamino and such. This, for them, in spite of everything, was their sanctuary, at least in a way. It may have had its more awkward moments (such as the matter of Anakin being in love with her, and Padme being afraid of a relationship), but still...well, for them, it was home. I also love Padme pressing herself against Anakin's chest, and the sort of forehead touching they do for a moment (*is admittedly a sucker for forehead touching, or something akin to it*), and her snuggling against Anakin's chest.
On a sidenote, this is going to sound really weird, no doubt, but I kind of want a sort of Anakin hug. They just look really...d'awww. No matter if it's for Padme, Ahsoka, etc...yeah. Also, Padme needs to come back in CLONE WARS and snuggle her Ani. Seriously.
Their talk in regards to Anakin feeling lost:
I dunno; there's just something about how they both interact in the scene that's really well-done. That and the fact that while Anakin's determined not to lose Padme...Padme's not worried. Because if nothing else, she doesn't need Anakin to be more powerful. If nothing else, no matter what happens, she loves him (which carries over into later).

Also, this picture:

I seriously wish this had made it into the final film, I will admit.
Feeling one another across Coruscant:
Seriously, such a beautiful scene. It's when Anakin's in the Council chamber (Mace Windu told him to stay there while he and other Jedi went to face Palpatine), and he's worried about Padme, and...well, basically, they're sort of feeling one another even though they're miles away.

There's no dialogue in this scene (obviously), but it says so much. I just love how both Hayden and Natalie manage to get things across with facial expressions alone.
And I love the idea that Anakin would basically fall if only out of a belief that he's saving Padme's life. There's something about it that's...well, it makes him all the more human and tragic. He's not out for power or vengeance, but an earnest belief that he can save the woman he loves from dying. After all, if someone close to me was dying...well, I'd be doing whatever I could to save them. Perhaps nothing lasts forever, but that's not always easy to take. Add in the fact that Anakin was already in a difficult decision (thanks, Council and Palpatine both! /sarcasm), and...yeah.
Anakin's talk with Padme after he's carried out Palpatine's orders regarding the Temple:
It's one of those scenes that's very lovely and yet very creepy -- especially considering the context. Going to see Padme and check up on her and the baby after he's killed almost every Jedi in the Temple. I especially love him telling her "Everything will soon be set right". And this gesture:

I love the way he looks at her as well. And I think it makes things all the more chilling, and the more heartwrenching. Anakin wasn't like Sidious, doing what he did for the sake of evil; he was out there if only to save the woman he loved. It kind of paints an interesting picture, of how the ends don't justify the means, but at the same time, there are people who think that way, which is honestly frightening. And it adds a shred of humanity to Anakin; even in the midst of doing these horrible things, one cannot help but pity him. And Padme, for that matter.
Their confrontation on Mustafar:
First off, I love how they basically run towards each other:
And the hug:

And yet at the same time, it's not like it was. It's changed. Padme knows what he's done, and some of the things he says don't really help matters. For example:

Seriously, it's just such a hard scene to watch, especially with Padme's "You're breaking my heart" line, and Anakin basically...well, Force choking Padme. It's just terrible -- even after everything he went through to save her, he ended up killing her (if indirectly) in the end:

Anakin becomes Vader/Padme's death:

I think it says volumes that the first thing that Vader asks about is whether or not Padme is all right. Which really makes his scream...while it's semi-ruined by Memetic Mutation, it's also quite heartwrenching. Because after all this time, the woman he loves is dead, along with (seemingly) his child(ren). And Sidious...in the background, meanwhile, Sidious is laughing. After all, this sort of evil? That's what he does for a living. Manipulating people is just Tuesday for him, and that's what's so terrifying.
I think it also says volumes that even after all this time, Padme believes that there is good in Anakin. Because there's too much history between them both, at least for her, to be forgotten so easily. I think it says volumes that she's bearing his japor snippet, the snippet he gave her when they were younger, as she's being wheeled away in her funeral casket. Because she may be the only one who really acknowledges, who really knows, how good Anakin truly was. Even Obi-Wan...I don't think he knew. Not entirely. And I doubt he wanted to acknowledge it without making it clear -- understandably -- that Anakin and Vader were drastically different people. But Padme? I think she, of all people, knew the most about how good Anakin truly was.
So yeah? Favorite relationship hands down. 'Nuff said.
So yeah, overall? Love this pairing so much. Seriously. <3
