To say that the events of searching for Ma-Ti had left them mildly shaken up would be like saying that rain was wet or that Michael Bay was a terrible filmmaker only rivaled by Uwe Boll and Eli Roth -- it was both obvious and an understatement. But the fact that after getting drunk (more specifically, Nella had taken the Chick out to get drunk to cheer her up after the Critic's death) Chick had woken up with a throbbing hangover, Nella cooking eggs, and somehow, Doctor Insano with a baby (along with his son) was enough to tell the Chick that next time, maybe getting drunk with Nella wouldn't be a good idea.

When they rescue him from the wreckage of his TIE fighter, Darth Vader is not the same. If anything, Satine notices, his eyes are unfocused, even glassy -- he doesn't seem to recognize her, or any of his surroundings.
"Lord Vader," she says. "Obi-Wan, are you all right?" She hasn't used her husband's name in a long time since he became Vader. Since he betrayed the Jedi cause, betrayed the Republic, and just about everyone. She still doesn't quite know why he did it. Perhaps he thought he was trying to protect someone, but surely there could have been another way...
To this day, she doubts she'll ever know why Obi-Wan betrayed just about every one of his comrades. Why he betrayed --
The man who was once called Obi-Wan smiles at her, seeming almost unfocused. "Obi-Wan? Vader? Did you know them, by chance?"
Something in Satine clenches as she realizes what happened. The crash -- somehow, the crash must have impaired his memories. If anything, somehow, it makes it even worse. He isn't quite Vader anymore -- but he's not the man she used to know either. He's broken.
And for the sake of everything they had, she has to fix him.
"Anakin," she says, "Help me?"
Anakin nods. Even now, Satine swears that she can see tears in his eyes. Beside him, Padme places a hand on his shoulder. "It's going to be all right, Anakin," she says, "Don't worry."
"I don't know, Padme. I just don't know."
And even now, Satine muses, she quite agrees with him.

It's just an assignment, she tries to tell herself, again and again. A necessary disguise, just for the sake of privacy. A necessary disguise while they go undercover on the planet of Blacksilver, investigating the disappearances. But even now, something in Martha wishes that it was real.
Ever since she first met the Doctor, she's been, to say the least, fascinated by him. He doesn't even realize it, doesn't even notice -- if anything, he's still pining after his lost companion. Even now, something in Martha can't help but be at least slightly bitter -- she's here with him, but he doesn't seem to see her. He's still stuck, at least in his mind, with that old companion, whoever she was, and he doesn't realize that she's there.
It's a good thing that the two of them are good at acting. Because if any of the others on Blacksilver could really see what they were doing, it's more than just pretending to be married. It's the practice of a one-sided game. Martha loves the Doctor, but he's completely oblivious. He's lost in fantasy -- and though she's not lost in the same that he is, she's lost in her fantasy as well.
He's lost in dreams of that old companion, and she's lost in dreams of him.

He doesn't know how long they've been in this cave -- it could be a few weeks or so, or even a month. But at the very least, it means nothing if it means that he can't somehow keep Padme safe. He came close to losing her once. He's not going to lose her again.
It's not exactly what you call easy, especially considering that Vader's mostly separated by a suit, and Padme's flesh. If anything, he can only marvel at the fact that she's not severely uncomfortable as a result.
"Isn't it...uncomfortable?" he asks, and for a moment, he muses, he sounds almost like his old self. His awkward, afraid, vulnerable young self. He doesn't know whether that's wonderful or awful. No doubt awful -- after all, his past self was weak. Padme disagrees, of course, says that Anakin Skywalker was far from weak, but Vader doesn't agree. If anything, Anakin was weak. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been so easily defeated by Obi-Wan the way he was. He wouldn't have (seemingly) failed to save his wife, and their unborn children.
And yet even after all this time, Padme's faith in him hasn't been shaken. He doesn't know what to think.
Padme smiles up at him. "It's all right," she says. "As long as I'm with you...everything is all right. Even the cold."
"As it is for me," Vader says. No matter how bad things get, as long as Padme is with him, it doesn't seem so bad. At least when Padme's here, having to hide out in a cave on some ice-like planet seems, surprisingly, easy.

I know that it’s just a short drabble, but in the universe of the fic, has Padmé followed her husband to the Empire/Dark Side? Does Vader know that Luke and Leia are alive and if so, are they on his side?

Date: 2012-09-18 01:37 am (UTC)And thanks again! :D I'm thinking that in the universe of the fic, Vader found Padme again, and learned Luke and Leia are alive -- and then they're planning to find Luke and Leia and turn them to their side to overthrow the Emperor. *Makes note to expand it into a longer fic sometime*
