Let’s make JOSEPH KONY Famous!!

Who is JOSEPH KONY?

He is THE WORST LIVING CRIMINAL. He abducts children and makes them use guns to kill their own parents. He takes girls and forces them to be sex slaves. He calls his abducted children the Lord’s Resistance Army, AKA the LRA. He has abducted over 30,000 children and forced them to be child soldiers in Central Africa. He remains at large because he is INVISIBLE to the world. FEW know his name, even FEWER know his crimes. WE ARE MAKING HIM FAMOUS! Because when he is, the world will unite against him and demand his arrest.

I keep my journal on private, so only a few would see it, but rest assured I have other methods. My inner vigilante loves to make people like this the next "spot marked X."

I think you should see this and this. The other side of the coin. It looks like there's something messy in this, mate, and I don't like the look of it...

Or we could read this: http://justiceinconflict.org/2012/03/07/taking-kony-2012-down-a-notch/

Because I feel that the opinions of the Ugandans is somewhat more relevant than the opinions of Americans.

Or we could accept, perhaps, that there's no straight answer. Which is what critical thinking is about.

To explain my comment more clearly, the makers of Kony 2012 seemed to be asking us to take a stance without actually taking into account what the people of North Uganda might be wanting, or what their stance might be on the whole matter. Inviting what America thinks is best rather than what Uganda thinks is best is dangerous.

Granted, Uganda is in a dangerous state, and, as you say, there is no straight answer. There isn't a sole power there - there are two, and it teeters on a precipice. However, inviting a third power in is, in my opinion at least, not a good way to resolve the issue, and Kony 2012 does not address this fact, nor does it actually seem to care in the slightest about what Uganda might want for it's people. It only seems to care about what America wants for Uganda's people.

My apologies. My bad on this--it's pretty late here and I thought you were making an antagonistic point. As I see it then, we're pretty in agreement with regard to what to think about Kony 2012. And thanks for the link.

Oddly, it's early here, and while my points are coming across as crystal clear to me, I'm clearly not processing how they'll come across to others. Must work on that. :-/

Eh, happens. No blood, no foul... :) S'problem of text I guess. And I really did jump the gun there.

I agree. The Ugandans definitely should be able to handle this themselves. Still, it's best to keep the others vigilant -- if that makes any sense.

I don't take your meaning. Keep whom vigilant?

Just keep people in general vigilant, but Uganda especially. (If that makes any sense)

Why does Uganda need to be kept vigilant? Sure, they may be in the longest period of peace they've had for many years, but there are still periodic outbreaks of violence, and it's still held in a power struggle between Kony and the government. Beyond that, they're the ones living there. They have a far better idea of what they have to live with and what adders are in the grass than anybody else does.

Oops, this got long.

This is a hard thing for me because I've been fundraising for Invisible Children since 2006. Back then, after the release of their original documentary, they were well-meaning, and they were raising money to address child soldiers, one of Uganda's biggest problems.

In the past few years, there's been a shift towards a political agenda, and that scares me. I agree that the situation is very bad, but I really don't think that sending in troops, or further arming the Ugandan army without a direct appeal from leaders within the country is a bad idea. America has never been good about disrupting the balance of power in unstable countries. And the point that one of the Tumblr articles makes is that killing Kony won't mean an end to the violence, just like killing bin Laden didn't mean an end to terrorism.

This article references other charities that work in Uganda that are working on more long term solutions, as opposed to fixating on the most visible aspect of a greater problem.

Woah, people like this actually exist? I thought slavery no longer existed in modern society, but I must of been naive. I swear, what he's doing to those children is even worse than murdering them, and that's saying something.
