As for Padmé becoming president, I've seen some AU fanfics where she becomes Chancellor. So, I can see it happening (if she survived, that is). ^^

BTW, there's actually a comic, THE LOST COMMAND, where Padme becomes Chancellor (sort of Anakin/Vader's views of...what should have been. It's quite sad, really. :( ).
