...and sweet zombie Jesus, no. *Buries head in her hands*

While nearly all Americans head to family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.

Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.

I just hope this doesn't pass. *Shudders* I really hope this doesn't pass...

UPDATE: Fortunately, there is a way to counteract this, as the Udall Amendment is also being considered being passed. From the ACLU site, "[It] will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values." I'm not too certain about this, but, IMHO, it's the best chance we've got. Go here to send a letter to your Senators: https://secure.aclu.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3865&s_subsrc=fixNDAA

And also in the meantime, spread the word, online or off. Get more people to sign. Because if the NDAA comes to pass, everything we fought for in the Revolutionary War and otherwise will be for nothing.

And we can't let that happen.

Is it just me or is America becoming more and more like 1984 as time goes on?

I've been saying this for a while... Even gone so far to look into relocating to Canada but I doubt I'll ever actually do it with my family ties & whatnot here but ... Then again depending on what happens in the next election...

I am so insanely glad I live in Australia. I mean, yes, the current government are made up of a bunch of extreme left-wing bleeding hearts who are tearing apart the economy like there's no tomorrow, but... yikes. No serious talk of censorship or letting the military stampede all over private property!

Hope things turn out better in the next election for you guys in America.

I'm very tired, and I accidentally misread your cut text as "gifs behind the cut," and when I clicked, I was like "Wut? This isn't amusing at all..."

I'm not even going to go near the whole US politics thing. ^_^

People are surprised by this turn of events? We've been letting this happen through our own non-response since World War I. The question to ask is this: now that you know, what are you prepared to do about it?

That is true. I guess we just never imagined it would come to this. *Sighs* I think the best we can do is keep posting about this. If you've got a Tumblr, use it. If you've got a Twitter, use it. Livejournal, Facebook -- any place, online or off, that you can spread the word. And fortunately, there's this:

https://secure.aclu.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3865&s_subsrc=fixNDAA

Because, fortunately, there's also a counter to this -- the Udall Amendment. From the ACLU site, "[It] will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values." (http://www.aclu.org/blog/national-security/senators-demand-military-lock-american-citizens-battlefield-they-define-being) I'm not...too optimistic about it, but it's the best chance we've got. America may be part of the battlefield, but it doesn't mean that US citizens have to give up their freedom. It just makes everything we fought for in the Revolutionary War, in so many other wars, for nothing. And that can't happen.

That people don't believe it can ever happen is precisely why things are allowed to get as far as they can. The warnings are passed off as "conspiracy theory by crackpots." Spreading the word isn't enough. It's a good start, and it's necessary, but it isn't enough. While everyone's passing around tweets, they're ticking off our rights one by one. Hoping it won't happen certainly doesn't work. We've already seen the direct result of things like this: the interment camps for Japanese Americans during WWII. It sounds bad, and it is, but there is also hope. There is always hope. We just have to be ready and willing to take appropriate action... and only you can define for yourself what that is at each stage in the game.

Ben Franklin was asked what kind of government we finally ended up with. His famous response: "A republic... if you can keep it."

Ben Franklin's made of win. Seriously. :3

And this to all your comment. :) *Sighs* Unfortunately, let's say that similar views were espoused by my dad (regarding the "conspiracy theories" and all), and no matter how I tried to explain it to him... *Sighs* I guess it wasn't helping that he was late to work, so tensions were running pretty damn high, to put it mildly. #Did not have a good morning #Understatement

Sounds like a typical response to me, not just from parents, but from anyone who simply will not see. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. All I can say is never stop learning, and follow your gut.

It's never easy, and if my life is any indication, it doesn't get easier. That's the price we pay sometimes for being individuals. Still, glad it smoothed out.
