TITLE: Not Me, Not I.
SUMMARY: Luke's nightmares about Lumiya.
PROMPT: Murder (attempted or successful)
WARNINGS: Angst, rusty writing skills, and possible Nightmare Fuel.
They kept reassuring him that he did the right thing. That it was perfectly understandable
besides Tionne, who reproached him for not even considering the possibility of meditating. You may have killed Lumiya, but her followers still remain...
considering the circumstances. Jaina had stood up for him,
"Give him a moment, for pity's sake!" Jaina snapped. "He's grieving!"
Ben had stood up for him,
"Lumiya was far from harmless!"
but even that wasn't enough to stave off the guilt. Not only had he killed the wrong person
Mara's killer was still out there. He had to find a way to capture -- or kill if he couldn't capture -- the one who had done it. For everyone's sake.
but he'd broken the Jedi Code. The Code he'd sworn to uphold. He was not a Jedi like his father had been -- granted, his father had done despicable things as well, but he hadn't done what Luke had done.
He hadn't slaughtered an opponent in cold blood.
She was close to falling. Too close. And against his will, Luke found himself pulling her up, pulling her away from the edge -- perhaps it was misguided heroism. Perhaps it was the same hold that Shira had had on him for years -- even finding out her true identity, Luke couldn't bring himself to hate her. Perhaps holing himself up in his room sobbing from sheer heartbreak
How could she?
How could he
but despite everything, he couldn't bring himself to hate her.
It was a continual dance they shared. Luke Skywalker and Shira Brie -- two people who weren't supposed to love each other the way they did. Yet Luke loved her in spite of himself. And somehow, he knew even as he looked into Lumiya's eyes
those cold, dragon-like eyes
he knew, somehow, that despite everything, she'd felt that way too.
"You know I didn't have a choice in the matter," Lumiya said.
"I don't. There were plenty of other ways -- "
"It's for a brighter galaxy. Just like your father imagined it."
And even remembering the holorecordings of his parents that R2 had shown him, Luke found himself unable to disagree.
"I'm sorry." His voice had cracked -- Force, those tears, they burn like fire...
And before he could stop himself, he'd stabbed her through the heart.
She fell.
And fell forever.
And Luke was left alone on that cliff, broken and vulnerable -- and somehow, the worlds hadn't stopped turning. How could they still be --
Even now, trying to get to sleep, it was far from easy.
Even now, he still had dreams of falling. Freefall in the dark, his father had called it. No way to see which way was up or down. And no one to save you.
His father had Padme.
And long ago, Luke had had Mara.
But that wasn't the case anymore.
Mara was dead.
