There was a Tolkien Society in my high school and a friend was a member and tried to get me to join, but at that time the books didn't interest. Then five years later, they did and I read maybe three chapters before putting them down. I think what made me discard them was a lengthy description of a tree, ha. Then another five years passed before I picked them up and devoured them. Change of taste or something, I guess. But they're good despite the Arwen/Aragorn romance which needs a microscope to be seen except in the appendix.
I first read them in middle school. Call me bored. :) And yeah, I was pretty disappointed that Arwen didn't get more page-time in the main story, but TBF, I doubt Tolkien could have inserted her anywhere in the story without...disrupting it, so to speak. Kind of a pity, really. :/ (IMHO. :)
