Blame the ROTS novelization. Maybe I'm (slightly) deluded, but there were times when I thought, "Hmmm...maybe Palpatine *does* semi-care about Anakin." Call me crazy. XD

Hmmm... I think I've read some of the parts you're referring to. I am of the opinion that yes, he *did* semi-care about Anakin... in the same way that a good player cares about the best card in a game. XD
