Title: The Nature of Inevitability.
Summary: The Doctor wonders if there could have been another way.
Prompt: Fatalism
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
He'd like to say that the fate of the Family was inevitable, in the end. Even now, speaking with Rose and Martha, he'd like more than anything to say it was inevitable, and yet somehow, he can't. Even now, remembering how he punished the Family, all of them, he cannot help but wonder if there could have been another way. If, perhaps, he could have given them a chance at redeeming themselves. After all, he's caused so much pain in the Time War, and even before and after, that somehow --
Even now, though, he's not quite sure. Even explaining to Rose and Martha why he hid, why he did what he did, he doubts any words will truly do justice to what he did. Even the worst part of it was wrapping the Father in chains, dropping him to his doom, a place where he could live forever, as a punishment for what he had done. Even now, hearing the Father's screams and pleas for mercy calls up another memory: a memory of a man with a thick, dark beard, burning to death before the Doctor's eyes.
"I don't know if there could have been another way," the Doctor says, "But I wish there was." He runs a hand wearily over his brow. "I've caused enough suffering for a lifetime or more. If I can do some good for a change..."
"I think you've done plenty of good," Martha says gently. "For your part."
"I don't know." He can still see Adric in his mind's eye, as well as Koschei, and so many others. "Come on, Rose, Martha," he says, "We have work to do."
Even now, though, getting back to work, asking them where they'd like to go next, the Doctor isn't sure if they'll trust them again. Or perhaps they will.
Even now, he doubts they will forgive him, and justifiably so.
Even now, though, he vows that no matter what happens, he will never do to another being what he did to the Family of Blood. No matter what. He's caused too much pain in the Time War. He can't cause any more.
Even now, though, he can only hope that promise is easy to keep -- but he's far from sure.
