Title: Medbay Beds
Summary: Poe visits Ben in medbay.
Prompt: Terror
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
It is once Han and Leia were out of the room that Poe walks over towards Ben. For a moment, Ben fears that the twelve year old will yell at him, but instead, Poe kneels next to his medbay bed. "Hey, Ben.”
“Hi, Poe.” Ben won’t deny that he’s still a bit worried. Mom and Dad are never mean to him, but he can sense the fear in their minds, in their eyes. Fear for him, yes, but sometimes Ben wonders if it will ever cross into fear of him. The Voice definitely suggests that a lot, at least. That it’s only a matter of time before Han and Leia become afraid of him. “You aren’t mad at me too, are you?”
“Me? No. Of course not. You just gave us all a good scare. No, no, we’re not scared of you, Ben, really. We could never be scared of you, really.”
Ben smiles. “You mean that, don’t you?”
“Sure. So,” Poe says, “What happened?”
“I was trying to heal birds and Mom and Dad got mad at me.”
“Awww, Ben,” Poe says, smiling warmly at Ben in that way that doesn’t feel patronizing, but instead like it welcomes you in. “They just didn’t want you hurt or…well…”
“I know what ‘dead’ is, Poe,” Ben says wryly, as wry as a nine year old can be. “I’m not a dummy.”
“Didn’t think you were.”
Ben giggles despite himself as Poe ruffles his hair. It should annoy him (he’s not a baby anymore) but he never gets the impression that Poe just sees him as a stupid kid who shouldn’t be taken seriously.

"You okay?” Ben says.
Poe nods. “Just…usual school stuff."
Ben can see in his mind that other students are carefully avoiding Poe. Whispers, some of them about Ben. Them being afraid of Ben is bad enough, but Poe…?
“No one’s mean to you, right?” Ben says.
He’d outright ask about the images he saw in Poe’s head, but he doesn’t want to intrude. It’s like Mom said. Imagine if someone entered your room without knocking. Ben knows he doesn’t want to ever hurt Poe.
“Well, um…”
“People shouldn’t be mean to you." Ben says.
I’d do anything for you, Ben thinks. He’s only nine, but he knows he loves Poe Kes Dameron more than Poe can ever truly know.
He loves Poe, as much as a child can.
***
Poe has to go, though he leaves Ben an X-wing model he made as a get-well present. Ben thanks him, sets it on his nightstand even as he settles into sleep.
