Title: Rise With Me

Summary: While ruling as King of Naboo, Ben knows he would trust no one other than Poe to rule with him.

Prompt: Marriage (Arranged Accidental Or Otherwise)

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

When King of Naboo Ben Solo initially thought of getting married, an arranged marriage was not what factored into it. (Was it really an arranged marriage, he wondered, if you got to pick the person in question?)

He couldn’t picture marrying anyone at the moment but Poe Dameron. The only objection to their union was one advisor, who had suggested that Poe was less than because of his past as a Spice Runner.

There was nothing about Poe, though, that was lesser. He was, plain and simply, a good man. And for someone who could lead Naboo into a better age with Ben, who better than someone he had never stopped trusting or loving?

Ben didn’t know how long they took to prepare him. Fitting him into one of those ridiculously elaborate outfits, outfits that Ben had no idea how Padme even bore. She’d been fourteen when she was queen too, and Ben was twenty three. Even at fourteen, Padme had basically been fearless, unstoppable.

He wondered how she put up with the powdering of her face, the streak of red down the center of her lower lip, just like Ben was having done to him right now.

He wondered if Poe was going through the same ridiculous preparations in order to be Ben’s consort, right then and there. He must be, Ben thought, suppressing a chuckle at the thought. He wondered if Poe was objecting to being changed out of his godawful orange flight suit in order to be put in more respectable clothes. How exactly would Poe look in a fine suit…?

Pooja Naberrie, who was helping with the proceedings, grinned slyly at him. “You’re in love with your husband-to-be, aren’t you?”

“With all my heart.” There was no use lying to Pooja, no use lying about how absolutely excited Ben was, despite himself, to see his husband. His husband. Political bantha-shit was bearable, just for that.

Pooja smiled. “My aunt Padme had a short marriage to her husband. I like to think they were happy, though. No one loved her like Uncle Anakin did. She was his galaxy.”

Ben tried not to think about it too hard. Maybe he’d come to terms with it, someday. For now, he could at least promise himself that he wouldn’t end up like Grandfather. That he’d treat Poe with nothing but the love he deserved.

“I’m sure,” Pooja said softly, “If Aunt Padme or Uncle Anakin were here, they’d say you picked a good man.”

“I did,” Ben said.

I did with all my heart.

It was worth seeing Poe. Worth seeing him in those rich robes, the way they had done his hair, the brilliant smile that crossed his lips. It was worth being close to him, so they could banter even between the proceedings.

“You look beautiful,” Ben said. “The most beautiful man in the galaxy. Or galaxies.”

Poe smiled, that smile like sunlight. “So do you, Ben.”

“They did a lot of preparing to make me look the part,” Ben said lightly, and Poe laughed, softly.

They had to cut the chatter, sooner or later. They walked through the exchanging of the vows of Naboo — the promises to defend each other, honor each other. Ben spoke of his devotion to Poe, and Poe to Ben.

The kiss was just a finishing touch. They probably looked disheveled but the time they were done, and yet Ben doubted he felt more right, right here, right now.
