Dec. 17th, 2021 06:14 pmTitle: Dauntless
Summary: Ben takes Poe to a place where Poe was born.
Prompt: Relative Values: Families
Author’s Notes: Got the Sith Temple thing off Twitter; I don’t remember if it’s canon or not.
It was two years since Kijimi, and one moment where Poe could have some time off from the flight academy. Life Day was coming up, and Poe doubted that he felt more alone. At least before Ben offered to take him to the Sith Temple where Shara Bey had given birth to Poe Kes Dameron.
Poe couldn’t believe that he was doing this, if he was to be perfectly honest.
He doubted that he had ever seen the Sith Temple where he was born before. His mother (and even thinking about it was enough to make his heart ache, wishing that she was here again) had said that it was an example of beautiful things coming out of something frightening. “Scary things can be beautiful,” Shara Bey had said. “Imperfections can be beautiful. This is no exception, little bird.”
He could sense Ben stiffening, if only a little bit. Poe turned to look at him. “Are you okay?” he said.
“It doesn’t matter,” Ben said. “I’m doing it for you. My own discomfort…doesn’t matter.”
Poe laced his hand in Ben’s, on instinct, and he didn’t miss how Ben’s breathing hitched. Like he was…smitten, somehow. Maybe Poe was looking too much into this, though. After all, what would a powerful Jedi see in a former spice runner trying to redeem himself?
“Ben,” he said, “You don’t have to hurt yourself for me.” Poe wondered if in a way, Dark Side energy was like poison to Jedi themselves. Like one whiff could kill them.
“I’m okay.” Ben smiled reassuringly at him. "Let’s go.”
***
The Temple was impressive, and Poe could only imagine the sheer courage of his mother to give birth atop a temple that seemed almost daunting.
“That sounds like your mother,” Ben said. “She was dauntless. Fearless. I…” He swallowed. It was obvious that he was trying to find the right words. “I think you’re that way too, Poe.”
“You really think so?”
“Always,” Ben said. Then, "I think it goes to show that good can come out of the Sith. I mean, they gave the galaxy you, just to begin with.”
That statement shouldn’t have felt as good as it did, it shouldn’t have felt so wonderful. But here it was, warming Poe’s heart and making him feel…safe. At peace. There was something about Ben that, around him, Poe felt at peace.
“I’m glad you’re here too, Ben.” Then, “I admit I wish Mama was here. There’s a lot of questions I want to ask her. A lot of things I want to tell her.”
For a moment, Poe thought that Ben’s eyes filled with guilt. Then it was gone. “Maybe one day, somehow, you can tell her. I know there are things I want to tell her too.”
Poe stood next to Ben. There was something about Ben’s towering frame that made Poe feel, oddly enough, protected just by his very presence. A wild creature protecting a smaller creature. They were both wild creatures; they could be wild creatures together.
“We both can,” Poe said. “One day.”
