Title: Epithets

Summary: Poe’s insults about the mask aren’t the worst thing Kylo’s ever heard.

Prompt: Secret Identity

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

If Kylo Ren was to be perfectly honest, he couldn’t say that Poe Dameron making fun of his mask was the worst thing that he had ever heard.

After all, he thought, it wasn’t the most cutting thing that he’d heard. “It’s hard to understand you with the apparatus” was nothing next to the levels of invective Snoke could unleash when he so felt like it, or Hux (not incorrectly) guessing that it was some sort of way for Kylo to play dress-up and differentiate himself from his parents just for petty reasons.

Well, the last one wasn’t true. It wasn’t his parents he hated, not even a little bit. It was his uncle he hated, for deciding that Vader was redeemable and somehow Kylo Ren wasn’t. He still wondered what exactly he, Kylo Ren (Ben Solo), had done to be seen as unworthy of redemption in Luke Skywalker’s eyes. What made him so very horrifying, so very repugnant.

It was something that Kylo still wondered about. That still stuck in his heart and refused to leave, poisonous hatred that still lingered there like some bitter aftertaste. Kylo had tried to be good, and Luke had only rejected him the moment he sensed a few intrusive thoughts.

It still hurt.

Compared to the insults Hux threw at him that proved that Hux didn’t know anything about him, or Snoke’s verbal abuse, Poe’s words hardly stung at all. If anything, Kylo would actually admire him if only for his sheer gall, his sheer courage in terms of saying them when coming face to face with his enemy.

That was Poe, in the end. Brave, compassionate, strong. Everything that neither Kylo Ren nor Ben Solo could be.

It was something that Kylo envied, if he was to be honest with himself. But not too honest, because if he was too honest, he’d admit that “envied” was too weak a word for his feelings. Even as a Jedi, he had coveted some of Poe’s qualities: his charm, his nobility, his kind heart, and it had only added to his frustration as well as his love.

He could figure out what to do with Poe later, though. He needed the map (stars, he would have to put off torturing Poe as long as he could; somehow the idea of cracking Poe open and stealing his secrets was unthinkable. Maybe Poe could just tell him), but…would he let him go? He wanted to; the idea of breaking Poe was unthinkable as well.

He would have to figure things out when he got back to the Finalizer. There were many things he’d have to think about when he got back to the Finalizer. For now…

“Put him onboard.”
