Title: Matelotage
Summary: A marriage, of sorts, of two pirates.
Prompt: Pirate AU
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Author’s Notes: A matelotage is actually a thing. I actually looked up homosexuality among pirates and was surprised to find this existed!
If there was a catalyst for Ben running away, one could safely say that it was the pressure of family expectations, coupled with a misunderstanding with Uncle Luke.
(Not that Ben knew it was a misunderstanding)
Even as he woke in what was supposed to be a safe space, his own bedroom, his Uncle with a dagger in hand, Ben doubted that he could feel more betrayed. The ice cold realization that his own family had turned on him.
Of course he’d fought his uncle off. Not that it was much of a struggle. He threw his uncle to the ground, ignoring the older man’s pleas that he could explain, and he felt at least a stab of guilt leaving him there, but what could he do?
His parents would never believe him. Tai, Voe and Hennix were on business.
So he ran. He ran so far to Poe, ran until he swore his legs couldn’t carry him any further.
And he found Poe.
And Poe, dear, sweet wonderful Poe, had listened. He’d understood, and comforted Ben, and assured him that he had him, always.
They’d run fast, Ben thought. Run far. Because in the end, they had to.

The two fled together, Ben and Poe. Some would call it a scandal, the son of an esteemed noble house running away with Poe, no doubt bringing disgrace upon his family just by running away, but it didn’t matter, Ben thought. Not when they had each other.
“You know that we’ll be at sea for the rest of our lives, don’t you?” Poe said, softly.
Ben didn’t think so much of Poe being this close to him. There were times, the way the two interacted, that they seemed almost like a single entity.
“It does not matter,” Ben said. “I would rather suffer today than go one hundred years without knowing you.”
“Ben, you shouldn’t be saying these things to me.” Poe actually did sound like his heart was breaking, right then and there.
“I always wanted to see the horizon,” Ben said. “What lay out there. We can flee from coast to coast, somewhere where no one can find us.”
“You’re speaking like you love me.”
“I do,” Ben said, softly. “You’re a good man. Kind. Generous. Funny. I love you. I think I knew it since before that feeling had a name. Here, with you — things are better.”
Poe spoke up in that moment. “I love you too, Ben,” Poe said. “I love you more than anything.”
Their lips met, and it was when the kiss was broken that Ben said, “Later...we could get married, effectively, at sea. Not a traditional marriage. A matelotage. We could be bound together, even if others don’t realize it.”
Poe smiled faintly. “With you, Ben, it will be more than worth it.”
