Title: For You, Just You

Summary: Arawn tells Atton about Atris after Telos, and Atton has to face the fact that he’s falling in love with her.

Prompt: Love-Hate

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

“So who was this ice queen anyway?”

Atton didn’t miss the way that Arawn flinched. Then, “Her name is Atris.”

“Right. Right.” They were headed to Dantooine, and Atton swore that he was going to lose it staring at the blue swirls that surrounded the Ebon Hawk. Hyperspace. That was what it was. It didn’t mean that it didn’t drive Atton crazy looking at it.

“Atris...” Arawn sat down, next to him in the co-pilot’s seat. "She was a friend of mine. A lot like an older sister, in a way. We had a pretty big age difference; she’s forty now, I’m twenty-eight...”

“You look younger than that.” Atton remarked.

“Do I? I guess I do.” Arawn shrugged, a very endearing shrug if Atton said so himself. He had mostly been seeing Arawn as someone he could help, just to redeem himself.

He thought back to that cell on Telos, pleading with Kreia not to tell her, how Arawn would think less of him if she knew. If she knew that he was a murderer, if she knew that he had tortured people who most likely used to be her friends out of sheer devotion to Revan, the man who’d saved him...

She’d run. He could only picture the look of repulsion in her eyes, the look of horror. She had trusted him so easily on Peragus, had accepted him so easily. It could come undone in an instant. And he was selfish in that regard. He didn’t want to even think of what would happen if she left.

And Kreia...well, Kreia had all but chained him to Arawn, without realizing that he would have done anything for Arawn, just to atone for what he had done. (Atton, atone. Atton supposed it was appropriate, in a way)

“Atton?” Arawn said, softly.

“Yeah. Fine. Just a little lightheaded. You know how being...knocked out can be...”

Arawn nodded. “Given my experience, I’d have to agree.”

Atton felt his lips twitch, at least a little. She was serious, but she could also be incredibly funny. She could surprise him. (Stars, he was falling even more in love with her, and she had no idea, she just didn’t know)

Arawn continued. “Atris...she was like an older sister to me. I know that sounds unbelievable, but she was. And she...well, she was too young to be my mother, but there were times she’d take pride in me, a lot like a mother would. We had an argument when I left for the Wars; she was worried I’d die and...well, of course I reassured her I wouldn’t die.” A bitter smile. “She said later Malachor V should have been my grave.”

Atton was trying to keep his “Jaq” side in check a lot of the time. This, though...it seemed like Jaq was threatening to claw its way out.

“She’s an idiot,” Atton said. “Just because she couldn’t be bothered to get her hands dirty during the Wars doesn’t mean she should have wished you kriffing dead.”

“Yeah, I think Bao-Dur said something along those lines. Definitely more...diplomatically, though.”

Atton laughed despite himself. “That’s Bao-Dur for you.” Then, “But somehow you two didn’t kill each other. You and Atris.”

“She was more willing to accept my help when I told her about the Sith from Peragus."

“Well, that’s...good. I guess.”

Silence.

“Look, she was wrong,” Atton said. “I mean...you're one of the bravest, most beautiful women I’ve ever met.”

Her head tilted. “Beautiful?”

“ ‘Course you are. I mean, Luxa noticed.”

Arawn actually did laugh. Atton couldn’t help but actually notice, the way crinkles appeared around her eyes, the way that beautiful, expressive mouth smiled...

Dear stars, he was doomed. For her and only her. He would protect her with all he had, this beautiful, uncommonly kind woman.

She became more serious then. “Thank you, Atton,” she said. “Really. Truly. I needed to hear that.”

Thank you. Did she know he would do anything for her, this beautiful, powerful, uncommonly kind woman that — kriffing hell — he was basically besotted with?

“No problem,” he said.

He was falling in love with her, and she had no idea.
