Day 10: Ship that became canon even though you didn’t expect it to.
Snape and Lily. Well, not really canon -- it's very much unrequited, not really an official ship * -- but at the very least, an integral part of Deathly Hallows . Then again, back when I was a kid and waiting for Deathly Hallows to come out, I actually didn't expect Snape to be a good guy. It was back when the "is Snape a good guy or a bad guy" debates were raging; in fact, at the bookstore that we visited, they were actually giving out buttons that showed what side you were on and stuff like that. And my mom was very much on the "Snape's a good guy" side of all of this, while I was on the "Snape's a bastard-coated bastard with bastard-filling" side of things (okay, my younger self didn't say it in those words, but you get the gist of what I thought back then. I was pretty young back then; I don't really know what age I was, but I was young. And very naive, as you can tell). I think it didn't help that I was in shock after what he did in Half-Blood Prince and was thinking, "There is no conceivable way he can come back from that." Sort of me thinking that he'd crossed the Moral Event Horizon long before I knew what that word meant. And my mom, my brother and I had several heated debates about whether or not Snape was a good guy, and while I read some fanfics that managed to portray Snape as a good guy actually pretty well, there was something in the back of my mind that was going "bullshit". I was a pretty stubborn person back then in terms of my opinions on certain characters. Now that I'm older and a little wiser, I've become more flexible, but I can still be pretty stubborn. And take things too seriously. I've been trying to work on it.
Then Deathly Hallows came out and I read about Snape and Lily, and let's just say that even though I should have seen it coming, I didn't. I didn't see it coming that the whole thing at the Astronomy Tower was a massive Batman Gambit on Dumbledore's part, that Snape was in on the whole thing, that Snape could even be somewhat likable (his line about the epitaph, for example. Say what you will about Snape, but he does have his moments) and sympathetic (I actually felt terrible for him. Not an easy feat) and that his friendship with Lily could actually be made believable (hell, I loved them interacting, from the moment they met and onwards). I don't necessarily ship Snape and Lily (I'm more of a Lily and James person. Even if James Potter was kind of a Jerkass in the school flashbacks), but I think they have a very interesting dynamic. I kind of like seeing them as We Used To Be Friends, though.
And seeing Deathly Hallows Part Two -- they definitely did it justice. I think it's stuff like Snape and Lily as kids -- the child actors they got for the both of them are really damn good. Also, the scene where Snape breaks down holding Lily's body. I think what really makes it striking is that Alan Rickman's Snape is very stoic (he doesn't lose his temper like book!Snape did. Hell, when Harry calls him a coward in the HBP movie, he doesn't lose his shit like book Snape did) so seeing him just break down like that...it really did break my heart. "The Prince's Tale" in general did a great job at making me sympathize with Snape, and Deathly Hallows Part Two even more so. I don't necessarily ship Snape and Lily, but I definitely find their relationship very interesting.
Day 11: Character you like with several others
Honestly, closest I can think of is Rose. I know I've shipped her with Martha, a bit with Donna, and I've shipped her with Amy, River, the Master, etc. I don't know; I think it would be really interesting to see, real
* Honestly, if it were, it would be a hell of a different story, methinks.
