I didn't like how he did that. To make the movie more kid friendly? To make Han less a bad guy???? It never made sense.
When I first saw that, I was quite young, and thought it was ruthless. And smart. I didn't like Han very much at the beginning, but I wouldn't change him for the world (the later novels where he keeps moping and being a complete ass over the loss of Chewie, that's an entirely different thing that I got tired of.)
