Basically, Gaea is kind of a parallel sort of dimension to Earth -- our normal world, Earth, sort of takes place on a series of planes to other worlds, really. It's sort of a fantastic (in the fantasy sense) place, with a bunch of more fantasy creatures making it up, as well as creatures like vampires, werewolves, etc. In the prequel to the Astrid Grayson series it's been going through a pretty terrible war, and in the Astrid Grayson series it's become a bit of a dictatorship. So yeah...kind of a Crapsack World at the moment.
Introduce us to a main character
The main character, Astrid Grayson, is mostly an ordinary young girl who happens to be living on Earth (or at least the sort of...dimension of Earth, really. Yeah, I know it sounds really odd) by the time the story begins. She happens to also have sort of empathic powers and it's only later, after she has to flee Earth after the school is attacked, that she sort of learns to get them under control.
