Status report of the USS Hadhafang.
Apr. 4th, 2013 09:45 pmGenerally doing all right. Other than something this morning about Disney shutting down LucasArts (I really don't know what's driving Disney -- in the sort of some-idiot-driving-a-schoolbus-through-the-hallways-of-their-high-school-while-everyone-scrambles-for-cover way -- but I don't see how this is going to end in anything but failure. Seriously, man, why?), I'm fine. My period's finally clearing up, for one thing. (Hallelujah and praise be!) And I got to rant a bit with someone else over the phone. And got new music. Which is always a plus. :)
Also watched "Day of the Moon" for DOCTOR WHO. Suffice to say...it was pretty kickass
First off, what a whopper of an opening. I actually got convinced that Canton had turned evil for a moment -- what a relief to find that that was not the case! And the prison that the Silence were building for the Doctor...I'm guessing that they thought, "Pfft, hell with you, Alliance of The Doctor's Great Enemies Or Some Bullshit; we're going to show you how to do it properly." Although all things considered...well, that didn't really work either. I also liked when the soldiers discover Nixon and Canton walking out of the prison. That was a pretty funny moment. XD
As for the Silence themselves? They were still really goddamn terrifying. Honestly, they were. I know stuff like them having Amy strapped to that table and saying that she had been there for days (the appearance of Madame Kovarian earlier didn't help *) even as she protested that she had been there just for one day. And that Silence making Amy go to sleep... *Shivers* And those Silence on the ceiling waking up like fucking *bats*... *Shivers* One Silence by itself is unsettling enough; put them in a cluster and they get scarier somehow. Also, something that's really puzzling me in hindsight -- who is the Doctor that the Silence would want him locked away? I mean, I know what he's done, but that prophecy, that *question*...who is the Doctor, really? I suppose we might never know, at least not until November (because apparently the 50th is supposed to answer that question, though I'm not sure). And why did the Silence take over Earth like that? It was mentioned they were parasites, and that they needed human beings to do their will (the spacesuit, for example), unless...
This may be a stretch, but what if one of the reasons they set up this Empire on Earth was to take the Doctor down? A whole army to take the Doctor down? First off, to them, it would no doubt be oddly poetic, seeing the Doctor's favorite species, humans, ultimately help kill him. Second off, it would be pragmatic; after all, the Doctor is very powerful. Or it could be they needed the spacesuit for Melody, and the humans to defend their borders. Whatever it is, probably not a good thing (then again, pretty much nothing regarding the Silence can really be any good).
And what about ruling the world since "the fire and wheel"? Well, first a lot of our history takes on a new layer at least here (and I should really start writing a fic about this. Seriously, I should), and then there's...well, what's said honestly raises a lot of questions. And even the stuff like "You should kill us all on sight" -- granted, it does come in handy later, that bit, but that said...well, I can't say I would understand why that one Silence would say that unless it was taunting Canton. Or it had a certain Evil Cannot Comprehend Good moment; they don't understand why a human would be treating them. And what about the Doctor's message? Did he inadvertently help the human race play into the Silence's hands? (Then again, it could also be a case of "I just suggested it; I didn't think you'd actually do it!" on the Silence's part)
And I could be wrong, of course. It's just one of those things that confuses me a bit. That said, though, they were wonderful villains. I like how they also sort of play on "things that go bump in the night" as well -- if you ever hear a creaking, see a crack in your wall, etc., that's them. ** Not to mention that, slight confusion aside, the scene where it speaks with Canton was genuinely chilling. Just gloating about ruling humans for a long time, how they should kill the Silence on sight...yeah. And the fact its voice sounds like it rumbled up from the pits of hell doesn't help at all.
That said, I love Canton taping the whole thing. I have a few issues with the Doctor's way of handling the matter -- yes, it's wonderful to see humanity kick the shit out of the Silence (because really, no empire should be built on the backs of tyranny, no matter what form), but I will confess that the using the moon landing footage to defeat the Silence thing was a tad shady. I can understand it, if only because the Doctor needed to show humanity what was happening, and because they needed to save Earth, but...I dunno, that sort of thing has always been a bit of Nightmare Fuel for me. I guess then again, what makes someone squeamish really doesn't matter when the freedom of an entire planet is, basically, at stake.
I also really liked River and Eleven, on a lighter note, bantering while shooting down Silence. And River killing those Silence -- did I mention River Song kicks ass? Also loved her conversation with Eleven near the end; really heartbreaking and really well done. The fact that Eleven's first kiss with her was her last kiss with him... *Sniffles*
I also love Amy and Canton entering that orphanage. That writing on the walls (with a bit of bleak humor with the owner lamenting how it won't come off), Amy finding the child's room with the toys, the pictures...honestly, it was a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. And adds some Fridge Horror in regards to real!Amy (the real Amy is kidnapped by the Silence; the one here is a Ganger who doesn't know she's a Ganger) and what she was experiencing. Just wandering through that room was like a trip into someone else's nightmares, which I doubt is a stretch in regards to how real!Amy was feeling at the time. Add in what's revealed in "Asylum of the Daleks" and...oh, Amy. ;.;
I also loved the Doctor's conversation with Nixon prior to leaving (sweet and, considering Watergate, kind of ominous at the same time), including persuading him to let Canton marry, and Melody regenerating (damn good Wham Shot). Honestly, I loved this episode. It had its problems, but overall? Amazing. <3
* My brother actually mistook her for River for a second. I think it was the hair. XD
** Which gives me more reasons to not fall asleep at night.
So overall? Loved it. Definitely recommend. :)
