This is for all the Buffy and Harry Potter authors on my friends list. The original post talks about Buffy and Doctor Who, but when I followed the link, I saw that Harry Potter fandom is affected as well. I don't personally use fanfiction.net, but I know that some of you do.

Just a heads-up about fanfiction.net for those who might be interested.

If these numbers are correct, fanfiction.net just deleted roughly 12% of all Buffy and Doctor Who fic on there with no warning, no chance for writers to correct the perceived problems, and with temporary bans for those who get their stories deleted. Going by some comments I've seen, most have been removed either for using non-grade-school-friendly words in their summaries or for including "love scenes" that aren't considered "tasteful" (their words), but that's not the only thing they go by; one fic was apparently removed for including the word "killed" in its summary. One or two people have reported having their stories reinstated after mailing support, others have gotten rude replies that basically boil down to "RTFM, STFU." Personally I haven't gotten any reply at all after three days.
It might also be interesting to note that ff.net have blocked the possibility to export fics to AO3.
If you want to back up your ff.net stories and reviews, Storymaster seems to work pretty well.

Date: 2012-06-02 06:46 pm (UTC)(For context: I've been after them to delete my account for ages. I frankly saw no good reason why they should refuse to, and instead require me to delete things individually. I mean, seriously? So I put lots of dirty stuff there until they took it down. At long last.)
For what it's worth, I'm annoyed on behalf of the writers who got hit, though :/

Date: 2012-06-02 09:32 pm (UTC)Sigh. Oh ff.net. I'm not really surprised though - They used to have an NC-17 section and about ... (*pardon me while I have a GASP I've been around a long time now* ... ) 10 years ago WB got upset that little kids could find HP porn online and ordered a 'cease and desist' to a lot of websites that didn't have some sort of PW protection service to their NC-17 fics. So ff.net changed their ratings system (which is when they implemented the M - and whatever the other letters are because I can never remember
or care, really- system) and hid the M rated fics from their basic defaulted 'search' system. You can still find them if you include 'find all rated fics' (or whatever it's called) on their drop down menu but it's not in the default. So a LOT of HP authors lost all of the reviews they had on higher rated fics and started archiving at places like "The Restricted Section' (I think that's still around though I don't know... ), Skyehawke, and mostly LJ until LJ had their hissy a few years back. A couple of new archives also opened up (including one I was a part of for a few years.)
For a few years, IIRC ff.net was really strict about the whole thing but I think once the whole WB thing died down and now that there are no more HP films or books (unless JKR changes her mind... lol) I've noticed a lot more higher rated fics. Stuff that back during that time would have definitely been pulled.
All of this aside - I can't figure out why they're starting back up again. Unless someone complained...
ARGH!!! Frustrating!!!
ETA: This comment seems to have some information about some group that's going around reporting tons of stories. Haven't heard anything more about it to back that up though. But worth knowing about just in case, I guess.

Date: 2012-06-03 05:55 am (UTC)I used to be on there so much, but then the quality of stories dropped dramatically...some people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near writing utensils o.o
Can I get a link to this AO3? I've seen it mentioned in several places...but never with a link.
