Title: All For You
Summary: Sith Emperor Kylo speaks with an imprisoned Poe.
Prompt: Dark
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
He’s won.
Kylo Ren’s won. The Sith spirits haven’t touched him, likely wary of being bound to another Master. Even as Kylo Ren stands over the body of Emperor Palpatine, he knows he’s killed the man that’s been in every nightmare he’s ever had.
And he still feels empty.
It feels like nothing satisfies him. Not revenge, not genuine compassion being shown to him, nothing like that. Instead, it’s all just a huge void, an emptiness in the middle of his chest that feels like it may grow and grow bigger with the rage and grief that drives Kylo.
He’s won. He proved Snoke wrong, that bastard Skywalker wrong; he proved all of them wrong. It’s not enough. Kylo’s only glad that he didn’t take Palpatine’s offer. Something something Wookiee’s Paw, or something.
***
He shudders to think what kind of screeching speech Hux will broadcast across the galaxy. He really does.
***
There are cells, on Exegol — similar to the ones at the Trayus Academy, and it’s despite better judgment that Kylo kneels in front of Poe, who he hasn’t seen since…well, since recently, he’ll be honest with himself. Poe keeps coming back to him intermittently, then running away every time.
“So you’re Emperor of the galaxy now.” It’s clear Poe’s disappointed. “Somehow, I always knew you would be.”
“Did you?”
“It was the next step, wasn’t it, after becoming Supreme Leader?” Poe’s not just disappointed; he’s hurt, clearly hurt. “You — you keep having these snippets of hope, and then you throw them away. Why? Why do you keep doing this?"
How does he even begin to tell the truth?
“Everything I’ve done, everything I’ve ever done — it began with your mother,” Kylo says. “I wanted to bring her back.” And he tells Poe. He tells Poe everything. The nights investigating resurrection, the nightmares, everything. "I did it for you. So we could be happy.”
“You call this ‘happy’?”
“It wasn’t entirely what I had in mind.” What Kylo always had in mind was Shara Bey being alive, warm, in ways ghosts could never be.
Poe stares at him, like he’s changed forms, like he’s something unrecognizable. An image comes into Ben’s head of Padme, stepping away from her husband in shock and horror as she realized what he’d become. "This is wrong, Ben. My happiness — it wasn’t worth all but sacrificing everyone else. I didn’t want that.”
Kylo doesn’t need the Force to know it’s true. He’s hurt Poe — hurt him even deeper than the interrogation, if that was possible, because Poe now knows that like Padme, he was the catalyst for part of the galaxy’s fall into darkness, a love story gone horribly wrong and, like wars before it, teaching the wrong lesson.
He has power. But he doesn’t have Shara back, he doesn’t have a happy Dameron family surrounding him. The love he and Poe shared has turned twisted, poisoned.
And like his own worst enemy, Kylo Ren says, “It can still work."
He feels Poe’s hurt, betrayed gaze on his back even as he walks away.
