In which I do a Darkpilot picspam...

File this under "Things I'm doing to avoid writing".
This is just a bit of a display of...well, everything Darkpilot, including some of the fanworks that people come up with. In no particular order:

The kneel-before-Kylo moment from The Force Awakens. Despite the bit of black comedy that comes after (which I am still fond of), I think that this scene is still wonderfully effective. The atmosphere (the burnt-orange sky is a nice touch), the villagers watching...it definitely sets a certain vibe to the whole scene.

This is a bit of black comedy that I can't help but be fond of. I admit I didn't really get at first why other BenPoe shippers were kind of fanning out over Kylo crouching in front of Poe when Poe was first captured...but honestly, now that I think about it, I think it makes a lot of sense as to them to notice. It's a good subversion of the typical way the villain treats the hero when they're captured -- stuff like face-holding, hair-yanking, etc. It definitely is a subtle hint that Kylo is not going to be the typical Star Wars villain, that he's going to subvert certain elements of villain tropes. It also gives a glimpse into what he might be feeling and thinking; after all, Kylo...one thing that people overlook is that he had a live audience (a.k.a. the villagers) there at the time, looking over the scene, clearly scared shitless and probably even more confused when Kylo actually crouches in front of Poe, with that strange Myers-esque head tilt.
(Another detail is that Kylo seems to be having a different way of reading minds with Poe on Jakku vs. Rey on Takodana. On Takodana, we saw Kylo's outstretched gloved hand reaching towards Rey and Rey's face scrunched up in pain, but Poe? When Kylo picks up that Poe has the map, there's no visible sign of pain and Poe is lucid enough to at least make a joke about Kylo being hard to understand. It does make one wonder, at least, if Kylo has different ways of reading minds: one painless, one painful)

(Screencap credit: cap-that.com)
These two screencaps, paired together are...interesting. We get a defiant look from Poe that's pretty heated, and Kylo's just...watching as Poe's patted down, a little too calmly. It's pretty hard to see what's going on behind the mask, obviously, but Kylo's gaze is pretty steady and...cold? I think that was one reason why the filmmakers had Kylo's mask designed the way it was: to get the audience possibly wondering "What the hell is going on inside his head?" (And then, of course, Kylo takes the mask off later. I think the story reason that Kylo unmasked for Rey and later Han is to show him sort of mentally disintegrating as a character...which, of course, leads into TLJ and him going, "Fuck this shit; I'm killing Snoke.")

(Screencap credit: cap-that.com)
Poe, of course, God bless him, trying to save the villagers as he's dragged off. It is a curious sort of subversion of another villain trope on Kylo's part -- there's, of course, the classic "I'm gonna make the hero watch" trope when the villain does something horrible, like, say, kill people. See also TLJ; Hux and Phasma's troopers had no problem doing that with Finn and Rose, and keep in mind, Rose and Hux is one of the most popular Rose ships in fandom...though that may be because it's a popular sideship to Reylo. (Other popular sideships for Reylo include Poe/Hux, etc., which probably has to do with the fact that Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac starred together in the movie Ex Machina. Ironically, Oscar played a villain in that movie, and Domnhall played a hero) But Poe? It's not like Kylo purposely made him avoid seeing the villagers slaughtered, but it's not like he restrained Poe and forced him to watch either. (In fact, the stormtroopers mostly seem intent on hauling him up the ramp of Kylo's shuttle)
But yes, it definitely is an odd storytelling choice. Then again, (a) Kylo doesn't seem to be keen on the whole forced-to-watch thing in general, which makes him one step above Vader (who forced his own daughter to watch the destruction of Alderaan), and (b) I can imagine that Poe would probably still have some psychological scarring from not being able to save the villagers, given one of his biggest fears is not being able to save people (as shown in TLJ). (And of course, Kylo did kill the villagers for sheltering Poe and Lor San Tekka, so...ick)

This is a bit of...I think official artwork of Poe's interrogation? It's kind of interesting, seeing how it seems to have a completely different take on the interrogation than the actual film: for starters, Poe actually is looking into Kylo's face with...well, the same confused look that he gives Finn when Finn first breaks him out. It kind of feels like the artist copied a lot of Poe's expression from meeting Finn for the first time...which is interesting.

A lot of this scene is very intriguingly shot (even if the content is not pleasant to watch. I dunno; I like Poe being happy. It helps that he has a pretty smile), and one thing that I found interesting is how Kylo modulates his voice when he's speaking to Poe. He speaks very softly to Poe (it's subtle, but there's a certain timbre and grate to Adam's masked voice when he's speaking; for example, it sounds unpleasant and ominous when he's talking with Lor San Tekka, but it goes softer when he's speaking with Poe. Twice. In contrast, when he speaks with Rey while masked in TFA, it really only goes soft once on "You still want to kill me?"), and he seems to see him as a Worthy Opponent. "I'm impressed," he says, "No one's been able to get out of you what you did with the map." Indeed, Kylo and Poe's exchanges in TFA seem to be a case of...at least Polite Villains Snarky Heroes (Poe isn't rude. Snarky, yes, opinionated, yes, but not rude), with Kylo being complimentary towards him, snark on "Comfortable?" aside...at least before the unpleasant torture stuff starts. It definitely gives an insight into Kylo's head (and it should be noted that he didn't even give Rey that benefit in TFA. Even in TFA when he complimented her, it was mostly to Snoke, not to her face. Kylo is an odd individual), at least to how he sees Poe.

This was obviously a case of Early Installment Weirdness (every character goes through that), but when Kylo's interrogating Poe...one thing that kind of puzzled me a bit was why he didn't give a speech dissecting Poe's memories. After all, with Rey, he had no problem using her worst fears against her (stuff like her lonely upbringing on Jakku, dreaming about the island that turns out to be Luke's island, and casually dissing Han Solo for no other reason than...possibly he can), and with Del Meeko in Battlefront 2...well, there's a bit where you get to play as Kylo, slaughtering your way through obstacles in Del Meeko's mindscape while Kylo narrates. But Poe? He doesn’t get that. (Not that it makes what happens less disturbing)

This pretty much speaks to Kylo's borderline Sherlock Scan abilities, where he's able to discern that Poe's escaped, that Hux is frantic, and that Finn's responsible for it. Notably, he does not seem terribly concerned about Poe's escape -- in contrast, when he learns Rey's escaped, he's...not exactly pleased. (Of course, that could be because with Rey, Snoke was already pissed with him and things were getting worse for him) And when he comes face-to-face with Finn...yeah, he's pretty angry about Finn's defection. It's a very odd reaction from Kylo in this scene, just to be so calm about Poe escaping and seeming to make it way too easy for Finn to break Poe out. (There is the possibility that Kylo just feels indifferent-to-mildly-admiring about Poe, but...then again, who knows? We don't exactly have much to go off of in future interactions)

Poe either has some prior history with Kylo or really good Sherlock Scan abilities, considering that he managed to recognize Kylo without his mask and wearing different-ish clothes. (Also, given how close Poe's parents and Ben's parents were, I call horseshit on the idea that Ben-and-Poe-never-met) The interesting thing is Poe's eyes -- while it's not noticeable, and Poe seems more concerned about the idea of Luke facing off against Kylo by himself (which is kind of Hilarious in Hindsight considering that Luke was able to singlehandedly take on the Knights of Ren back when Ben was still a Jedi. Calling it a Curb Stomp Battle is being generous to the Knights), I noticed something about Poe's eyes that seems...almost like a kicked puppy? (Okay, that's a stretch even for me)

A pic from the TFA premiere. Just...look at them both! What a damn contrast from the film, where they're mostly snarking at each other. (And also, Joanne Tucker -- the blonde woman on the left -- seems pretty cool with it as well.

Adam and Oscar's...I think first onscreen collaboration together, in Inside Llewyn Davis. Which is actually a very good movie; Oscar's fantastic in it, even though Llewyn's the polar opposite of Poe. Believe it or not, they're not enemies in this and even sing a song with Justin Timberlake. Yes, really.

More of a YouTube screencap than anything else, but here's Adam and Oscar actually performing the song they sing in Inside Llewyn Davis live. Definitely a huge contrast to their onscreen interactions in TFA.

This was taken from the following MTV interview. The funny thing is...I don't know if JJ was just being a troll or not (sort of like "Reylo vs. FinnPoe? Why not combine the two and have PoeRen?"), but honestly, I am grateful that he at least dropped that hint. And honestly, considering some of the ways Kylo and Poe's scenes are framed, plus the fact Poe recognized him without his mask in TLJ (and, as a bonus point in the TLJ novelization, Poe says Leia was keeping tabs on him growing up as well as Poe recognizing that Kylo and Luke were related, which I can't imagine Leia made a public service announcement. "Yeah, my son's on the Dark Side. Don't judge me!")...my theory is that there was something going on/planned, but it got thrown out the window for TROS. (Of course, given that JJ blatantly lied about Khan being in Into Darkness to avoid spoiling the surprise...yeah, it's safe to say that JJ is quite the Trolling Creator)
The funny thing is that the MTV interviewer actually was onboard with it and that hashtag in one screenshot: that's not someone's editing; that was actually in the video. I think what kind of kills me is that JJ made that joke and yet there is nary a BenPoe moment in sight for TROS unless you count them narrowly missing each other on Pasaana.
*Sighs*
I don't hate JJ as a person or a creator in the slightest, and there are some parts of TROS I like, but what the fuck?!
They totally cut out the part where JJ does a dramatic reading of his BenPoe fanfiction. /kidding

Ah, Oscar and Adam -- what a contrast you are to your onscreen personas. In contrast to their shared scenes that involve...not very snuggly stuff, to say the least, Oscar and Adam are actually pretty good friends in real life. It's not made as blatantly obvious as John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, but it's obvious in photos nonetheless. The funny thing is that Adam Driver has described himself as very much against hugging, but he seems very comfortable with Oscar in this photo. Which is sweet, that he just has that amount of trust in him.

(Screencap credit to sadperfctboykylo-blog on Tumblr, originally from uomo-accivante on Tumblr)
Besides the obvious Oscar and Adam interaction, there's the fact that Daisy and John are having a great time interacting with each other. As for Oscar and Adam...it's kind of interesting, the way they interact and seem so comfortable with each other. I admit I kind of was inspired by this photo to think that prior to Ben's fall, the two of them had No Sense of Personal Space around each other, whether or not they were "together" or not. It is cool, really, that they're so comfortable around each other, Oscar and Adam, considering that society's kind of conditioned men into not showing affection towards each other in some ways.

(GIF from Vanity Fair's article about Oscar Isaac being charming as fuck, written before TLJ came out)
It's just really sweet that even in interviews, Oscar and Adam are really comfortable with each other. Note that Oscar's kind of teasing Adam about his Kylo Ren masked voice (which actually came off really, really well in the final product, suitably creepy) and Adam's just finding it actually pretty funny.

Gaylo-Ben is basically a BNF in the Darkpilot art department, and this is one of the pieces from them that I find absolutely feels-inducing. I mean, look at them both! Somehow, gaylo-ben can draw kids (teach me the ways of drawing children, oh Master, for I cannot draw them to save my life), and their expressions, and the idea behind this picture: that little Ben's comforting little Poe at Shara Bey's funeral (given that Shara died when Poe was eight, Ben would have probably been five at the time), and their outfits too. Gaylo-Ben kind of had this headcanon-ish thing that Leia liked to dress little Ben up in these ridiculous Padme-like outfits and somehow on Ben it looks adorable. <3
I admit I actually adopted that headcanon of gaylo-ben's, that Ben was there to comfort Poe when Shara died, because honestly, it's so beautiful. (Also, why is no one looking after Poe for a change; he hardly even gets so much as a hug in canon!)

(Source: kierque-primary on Tumblr)
Just...awwww. The story behind this piece of art is the artist thinks that every time Ben came back from Luke's, Poe would tease him about getting taller. This was one of the first bits of BenPoe fanart that I reblogged on Tumblr. (I remember that pretty vividly)

(Source: grassprint on Tumblr)
The story behind the art is the idea of the artist loving the idea of Ben and Poe going on "shitty dates", as well as Ben Force-pranking people to make Poe laugh. Which...honestly, say what you will about BenPoe, but that idea of that happening before Ben's fall is adorable and so is this artwork. (Also, teach me how to draw Ben and Poe, because I am not a very good artist!)

I actually found that art on Pinterest first and wrote a fic based around it, and...the complete art is as adorable as anything. There's definitely more where that came from, but...yeah. It was a pretty interesting picspam to make! I definitely hope this was...aesthetically pleasing (and promoted good fanworks).
