Title: Broken Things
Summary: Ben’s good at fixing things.
Prompt: Crack Treated Seriously
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
“You seem upset.”
Considering that Ben had walked in on him pounding his fists against the malfunctioning terminal while screaming about it being a traitor, Poe could say that it was very much an understatement.
“Terminal’s down.” Poe said. “I shouldn’t be freaking out but...it’s basic communication.”
“I don’t want you to hurt your hands.”
“Well, thanks. Yeah, I know. It’s not my proudest moment.” Poe’s shoulders slumped. “I don’t like it when I get angry like this. Especially not over something so trivial.”
“It’s not that trivial.” Poe could at least admire the way his boyfriend looked as he fiddled with the terminal. “I mean, it’s a vital means of communication. It would be like if we couldn’t write letters, or we couldn’t speak. It’s as part of the galaxy as anything.”
Poe nodded. “I guess.” He sighed. “It’s more than that. You ever get so angry you just...overturn a table?”
He felt embarrassed already admitting this to Ben, but it was very much true. He didn’t even remember what had caused him to turn over a table, though apparently it had been some sort of righteous anger. When he and Ben got angry, it got physical — though they never took it out on each other.
Ben seemed to think he hung every moon there was, and Poe...well, he couldn’t live with himself if he actually hurt somebody. Especially Ben.
An outsider would say that they relied on each other, like the other was the air they’d kill to breathe. Poe would say that, at least, Ben made him feel like even with his flaws, there was someone who loved him all the same. He was just one person. To Ben, he was the galaxy.
“You think I haven’t?” Ben said. He got under the terminal and got to work. “I mean...you’re not a bad person, Poe. You’re the opposite of a bad person.” He continued to tweak, continued to fix what had been broken. Continued to fiddle and work at the loose ends. “To be angry is to be sentient. I’d say human, but that’s throwing alien species under the speeder, isn’t it?”
“So it’s not just me then?”
Poe joined Ben, in his tinkering and his tweaking, and was rewarded when the terminal whirred to life. The two of them backed out from under it, grinning.
“Is it...” Ben began.
Poe grinned at his boyfriend. “Ben Solo, you are a genius, I swear!”
He kissed Ben on the mouth. Just because he could, really.
***
There was a moment, after they’d kissed, where Poe felt strangely better. It wasn’t like he was a raging wreck without Ben, but he couldn’t say he had the highest self-esteem. Kijimi had definitely put a dent in it, a dent that wasn’t just erased with the wave of a hand.
But Poe looked at Ben and saw something he liked about himself, he knew that much. And he was sure Ben could look at Poe and see something he liked about himself in turn. There was so much that Poe wanted to show him. So very much. To carry him as Ben kept carrying him.
“You could stay a while,” Poe said. After all, as a grown adult and a Knight, Ben could go where he wanted. And he needed someone to fight the demons in his sleep with him. Someone who would kill whoever dared to hurt Ben. It was only fair.
“Yeah,” Ben said, smiling faintly. “I could.”
