Title: Escapism
Summary: Ben hangs out with Poe — a surprisingly down-to-Earth popular guy.
Prompt: High School/College AU
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
The gym was already bustling with activity even as Ben sat on the bleachers, overlooking the situation. He already was planning out the next chapter of his fic — in the future that was the 2010s and 2020s, he’d at least be allowed to have an iPhone, but right now, he was stuck with a journal that he was already jotting notes in. He had to admit that stuff like this really wasn’t his style; there was something about being on the Mac computers after school, browsing different forums to hear people give writing tips and complain (that was as far as he knew, really), that was enough to make him feel like he was in his element. Ben wanted to be a writer one day, and fanfiction…well, who said that wasn’t a legitimate form of writing even though you didn’t get so much as a penny for it?
He began jotting notes in the journal. Plans for Darth Caedus redemption arc…

“Hey. Mind if I sit here? Everywhere else is packed. Or noisy.”
Ben nearly jumped at seeing the speaker as well as hearing him. A short, sort of slender young man, same age as Ben (eighteen) with a smile that already made Ben’s already active brain crash like a strained computer.
“Um, sure.” Was that Poe Dameron, he realized. Poe Dameron, one of the funniest, most charming kids in the school. And somehow Poe was here to talk to Ben.
In popular movies and such, the popular kid was usually either a jerk with no redeeming qualities, or someone who proved that looks could be deceiving and they were a great person to be around. Ben…well, hopefully he’d get the latter and not the former. (And by the way, what was up with popular movies?)
“You’re Poe, right?” Ben said.
“Yeah. And you’re Ben. I think we have creative writing together.”
Huh. Maybe Ben had gotten temporary amnesia from his brain crashing like a strained computer.
“Yeah, we do.”

Poe — unfortunately for Ben, it seemed that he was being drawn in by Poe a little too well. Startlingly well. Something about his smile, his eyes, everything. Even as Poe talked with him, Ben found himself laughing at a particularly funny comment that Poe made, and noticing Poe seeming charmed by him. (Him, Ben Solo)
“So what else do you write?” Poe said.
“Original fiction and fan fiction. Cosmic Wars.” Silence. “Cosmic Wars being the fanfiction, not the original fiction.”
“Huh, you too?”
Wait. Had Ben heard him right?
“Yeah, I’ve just gotten into that,” Poe said. “The fanfiction. It’s a good writing exercise. That and, y’know, it’s escapist in a way. Escapism within escapism?”
Ben snorted. He hoped no one would try that sort of X-within-X at any point; it'd probably end up being a disaster.
“That’s a way to say it,” he said.
“Yeah. What do you write, Ben?”
***
They unfortunately had to leave each other at one or so after talking extensively about how Darth Caedus Deserved Better, but Ben could say that in between that and getting to jot down Poe’s number in his notebook (and Poe got to do the same thing), he would say it was quite a good day he had so far.
(And maybe he’d print out his fanfiction for Poe sometime. Maybe)
