Ben was visiting the Academy. Of course he was. His presence shouldn’t have given Poe the exhilarated feeling of his heart speeding up, but here he was. And he had to admit he was also afraid.
Before, he had attempted to date other people. Attempted. It hadn’t worked, including with Zorii. And this...this could potentially ruin everything.

When Poe had brought it up to Kare, she’d laughed. Maybe it was the whole idea that she didn’t know any more than he did, but still...
“It’s not funny, Kare,” Poe protested. “I...I can’t just fall in love with him. I mean, I ruin everything...”
He thought back to Zorii in that moment, and whatever the stang they had shared. His other attempts at dates that had gone badly, back when he was a teenager trying to feel things out.
Kare’s face softened. “Why not, Poe? Don’t you deserve to be happy?”
Kare. Bless her, saying that right then and there. Poe sighed. “Because I ruin everything, that’s why. I mean, I ruined things with everyone else, and you know that old thing with if you keep kriffing things up in relationships, it’s your fault...”
“You’re not making sense, Poe.”
"What if there’s something wrong with me?”
“Look, that Zorii girl...it’s clear she had problems that you couldn’t fix,” Kare said. “I mean, maybe she was like...you know how Han had that Qi’ra woman? Maybe Zorii was just your Qi’ra or something.”
“I guess.” If even Han Solo could be unlucky in love, maybe Poe shouldn’t be too harsh on himself. Maybe.

Kare didn’t really give him much advice. Definitely commiseration; she was agonizing over asking Snap out, coming to terms with the fact that she was in love with him.
“So you don’t even have any tips on, like, flirting?” Poe said.
Kare sighed. “If you’re looking for that, you’ve come to the wrong place. I can definitely say that you’re not alone.”
“Am I interrupting something?”
Ben’s voice cut in, and Poe already felt his heart skip a beat. What was Ben going to think of him?
Kare took the opportunity to leave, and Poe sighed. "Traitor...” he muttered.
“What’s wrong?” Ben said. “Are you all right?”
Poe nodded. “Ben...I have something I need to tell you.”

A while of beating around the bush later, Poe admitted everything. “And I have no idea how a relationship works or even how to flirt." he lamented.
Ben nodded. “I see. Honestly, it’s okay. Even if you were the most inept at flirting I’ve ever seen, I’d still be crazy in love with you.”
“You love me?”
Ben smiled. “I think I always have been. Since we were kids at that. Since before I knew what it all meant.”
He took Poe’s hands. Poe had to admit he was scared, scared and exhilarated all at once. He could kriff this up very easily, he could ruin everything. But loving Ben...how could he not?
“Can I kiss you?” Ben said.
“Ben,” Poe said, “You can do whatever you want.”
When their lips met in that moment, Poe could definitely say that whatever else happened, today had been a success.
