Title: To See You Smile
Summary: The day Ben leaves.
Prompt: Age
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Ben is nine years old when the Falcon drops him off at the Jedi Temple on Ajan Kloss.
***
Even as he faces Poe in the yard of his Chandrila home, he’s already overwhelmed by the fact that he’s leaving. After all, for the love of the Force, he’s only nine! He shouldn’t have to deal with the idea of never seeing Poe again, or anything like that.
Poe is his best friend. And he’s smart, and funny, and cute, and kind, and bright, and Ben can’t just leave him, not like this. It isn’t fair. Nothing about this has been, actually. He knows that his parents are scared, though he doesn’t know if it’s of him or for him. (He’s learned there’s a difference)
Poe kneels in front of him, trying to get down to his size. “It's okay, Ben.”
“I just don’t wanna leave you behind.”
“Hey,” Poe soothes. “I’ve got you, you know. I’ve got you forever.”
Ben hopes so. He knows a part of him wonders if he’s still in trouble for resurrecting that bird. It was all for the sake of bringing Shara back, so the Damerons could all be happy. Ben, more than anything, wants the Damerons to be happy. He wants to.
Will Poe be happy? That’s another terrifying question that lingers in his mind despite better judgment. Despite the fact he’s nine years old and shouldn’t be worrying about the well-being of a twelve year old. He just wants to see Poe happy, to see him smile. He deserves to smile.
Ben would move the stars to see him smile.
“And you’ll come back, and you’ll have learned a lot,” Poe says. “And you’ll be an amazing Jedi. I promise, Ben.”
“Really?”
“Really."

Stepping into the Academy long after saying goodbye to his parents, Ben Solo tries to keep all that in mind.
