So, got back from watching the DOCTOR WHO episode "Doomsday".
Or rewatching it, at least. Anyway, amazing episode, just as good as I remember it, but sweet Jesus was it heartbreaking. (Yeah, I know, "Doomsday" is heartbreaking. Film at eleven. :P)
Let's say that there are a lot of heartbreaking moments in the episode, I think. One of them being when Yvonne Hartman's going to be upgraded into a Cyberman. Just her "I did my duty for Queen and country, I did my duty -- oh God! I did my duty!" really pulls on the heartstrings. As well as later (also overlapping with a Crowning Moment of Awesome, IMHO) when that patriotism helps to override her cyber-conversion in a sense, and she goes down swinging. All while saying, "I did my duty for Queen and country" again and again -- oh yeah, and one metallic tear leaks out: http://the-medusa-cascade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=48912&fullsize=1. Just goddamn. I think it's the fact that Yvonne...she wasn't out for money or power but genuine love for her homeland and her belief in it. I think another depressing part was Rose's whole "should I stay or should I go" thing. At least in a way. I know her talk with her mum about why she's staying with the Doctor (because the Doctor needs someone, and considering later events, Rose might be right. That and in "Parting of the Ways" she looked into the Time Vortex, and saw everything that is, was and ever could be -- maybe in a way the Bad Wolf was still working inside her, warning her about what could happen to the Doctor should he travel alone. Probably me stretching, but I think it's possible. That and she's just that devoted to the Doctor) was really moving. Because it's not that she doesn't love her mum, Mickey, etc. She just knows, in a way, that the Doctor needs her more. Jackie, meanwhile, doesn't want to lose Rose. It's really a choice that I wish Rose didn't have to make , not because I had any problems with it, but...well, it's just depressing. And then there's the obvious scene: Rose letting go of the lever. I mean, seriously, lever, you had one job! *Glares at it* Seriously, though, there's something about Rose being nearly sucked into the Void along with the Daleks and the Cybermen that's horrifying. And then there's the wall scene. I mean, I'm glad that Pete caught her and everything, but still...I think there's something about Rose collapsed against the wall that breaks my heart. There's nothing to rely on except their facial expressions (and Murray Gold's magnificent music), but it says so much. Not to mention the both of them eventually turning and walking away.
And later, Bad Wolf Bay. I just...well, I love David Tennant and Billie Piper in this scene; they do such a brilliant job. Just the sheer ease of their interaction -- there's bits of humor in there, such as the confusion over the beach's name on the Doctor's part (and on a sidenote, how far did they have to drive in order to get to somewhere in freaking Norway? I'll admit that's a tad confusing), and...well, there are actually separate bits that get me close to tearing up. I know Rose's "I can't think of what to say" set me off. It's just such a human touch. And the Doctor's pride over Rose being a member of the new Torchwood. And the Doctor saying that Rose, back in her old universe, is presumed dead. I mean...we see Jack's reaction in regards to Rose in "Utopia", a very late Season Three episode, and Rose has mentioned earlier about her friends -- how are they going to react to hearing that Rose is "dead"? There's also the matter of the Doctor's "Same old life, last of the Time Lords" line and when Rose says, "On your own?" he just nods. Seriously, poor Doctor. He's sort of recovered from having to destroy his race along with the Daleks because of a complete madman, and then he loses the woman he loves, all because of a return of the Time War, in a sense. It's just...you poor bastard. All this time and you're back to square one again, at least in a sense, and probably even worse off than you were already. And on top of that, he doesn't even get to say he loves her. Just...ouch. But even though a lot of "Doomsday" was a downer, we got some funny moments in there. For example, the entirety of the Dalek-Cyberman trash-talking scene. And Mickey's snarky aside to Rose. And Rose's "Five million Cybermen, easy. One Doctor? Now you're scared." Oh, Rose. XD And Dalek Sec (I think) going "Social interaction will cease!" when the Doctor, Rose and Mickey are reunited and being all...well, chatty and fist-bumpy about it. (I think the Daleks missed their true calling; being teachers at my high school. XD *) And though the ending of "Doomsday" was depressing as hell, Donna's sudden appearance in the TARDIS was pretty funny. Also, earlier, the Doctor's 3D glasses, and taking the time to tease Jackie a bit. XD (Oh Jackie. I'm going to miss you -- until Season Four, that is, but still) I also loved alt!Pete and Jackie meeting each other. Just...d'awww. <3 And the Doctor's comment about the Daleks (thank you, TV Tropes, for the quote):
"... sealed inside your casing. Not feeling anything. Ever. From birth to death, locked inside a cold metal cage. Completely alone... That explains your voice. No wonder you scream."
It really makes what Davros did to them all the more chilling. Of course, according to some discarded "Journey's End" dialogue, Davros genuinely thinks he's doing what's right. Sort of him basically being born from war, in a way -- seeing Skaro's surface for the first time and how broken it was led him to become who he was. (From what I can remember, that is) And it really makes what he does all the more chilling, in a way -- the wasted world left by the Reality Bomb? That's his idea of bringing the Daleks peace. I can't say how well it may or may not fit in with the Davros in old WHO and such, but it's pretty interesting, and I think would have shed more light on what Davros was doing. Seriously, nothing's scarier than a monster that somehow believes he's doing the right thing.
But I'm getting way ahead of myself.
I also loved the Doctor arguing with the Cyberleader ("you're in their homes, you've got their children! Of course they're gonna fight!"). Hell, the Cybermen in general were done beautifully (especially the chilling fact that they believe they're doing you a favor, and completely do not understand emotions and how they work. To them, living in an emotional state...they don't understand why anyone would live like that. And considering the emotional inhibitor...yeah). And the Daleks. I think the key difference between the Daleks and the Cybermen is that Daleks just want to kill everything that's not Dalek. The Cybermen, when dealing with non-Cybermen, seek to "improve" them, in a way. Hell, it's them that try and ally with the Daleks, and the Daleks that basically go "LOL nope". Because anything not Dalek is inferior, and why would a Dalek want to ally itself with a seingly inferior being? At the same time, though, Daleks aren't really averse to thinking outside the box -- the Cult of Skaro is proof enough of that. Still, even Daleks have their boundaries, e.g. Sec the half-human hybrid. But yeah...
I also liked Jake and co. kicking ass and taking names, Rose telling Sec that she killed the Emperor of the Daleks, and a lot more. Honestly, it was just an amazing season finale. Sad, but awesome.

So yeah, I recommend it -- but with plenty of tissues on standby. Seriously. (And yeah, I'll admit I was sort of a wreck at the end of this episode)

If you ever watch Torchwood (and you might already be spoiled for this storyline), the "Cyberwoman" episode is a chilling and heartbreaking coda to this story arc. One of the standouts of the entire series in my opinion.
