The talking meme is back!
What are your hopes and fears for Star Wars 7 and beyond?
I'll start with the fears because, to be honest, I've found that talking about my fears comes more easily to me. I'm almost nervous as to what it says about me. But there's been so many rumors and whatnot floating around that to be honest, I'm getting nervous. Abrams said in an interview that there is a sort of innocence (I think that's what he said; it's the most I can remember) in not knowing, but it works for stuff like his TV shows, Lost, Fringe, etc. as well as Star Trek Into Darkness, where we could guess what was going to happen and be excited (or worrying, either way is possible) about it. But for Episode VII...well, it is fun to speculate, I guess, but being kept in the dark is kind of frustrating, I will admit. That and I'm...well, I'm going to have mixed feelings about this basically rebooting the EU. I know there are some aspects of the EU that I'd gladly discard (some of the more depressing stuff, for example, and some of the more stretching-suspension-of-disbelief stuff), but I don't want them to throw out all of the EU, if you get my meaning. I mean, I know there are some pretty awesome stuff that people would pay to see on the big screen, and a lot of stuff that means a lot to a lot of people. So yeah, Abrams and co.? Don't throw it all out, okay? Please?
That and I'm going to be pretty emotional at seeing Luke, Han and Leia again, especially considering that...well, some stories in the EU have just led them coming to bad ends completely pointlessly. Losing their kids, etc. That and even some stuff I heard about the EU is infuriating, like Luke judging Anakin for "abandoning" his duties at Mortis in Apocalypse , never mind that Anakin still had to fight in the Clone Wars and whatnot. *Sighs* Maybe I'm just biased, but that pissed me off so much.
Hopefully, stuff like that won't carry onto the big screen. And hopefully, Luke, Han and Leia will be as awesome as they were when I first saw them in the OT.
I'm also curious to see if Han and Leia's kids will be included there. And how they'll handle them. The matter of Mara could be interesting too, in terms of getting a look inside the Empire itself and the different shades of gray it could provide. Same with Thrawn for that matter. I think it would be interesting to see the aftereffects, so to speak, of the Empire being defeated. I mean, that concept alone begs for something to explore it. I also pictured Karen Gillan to play Mara, because she has the looks, as well as the acting talent to play Mara.
Also, I'd love to see Anakin and Padme again, even if it's mostly cameos (Anakin as a Force Ghost or in a hologram, Padme in a hologram, etc.), and Anakin getting a chance to talk with Luke and Leia both, if only to help the both of them come to terms. Maybe Leia also worrying about her kids a bit, etc. Just have a lot of action, a lot of character development, a lot of the things we loved in Star Wars. Also, the Jedi Order that gets set up learning from the mistakes of Yoda and the others, and Leia being Queen of New Alderaan as well as being trained as a Jedi, because that would be freaking amazing.
As for beyond...well, I'd love sort of exploring the difficulties of the New Order and the New Republic, such as dealing with people who don't always agree on things, who have different approaches to doing things, etc. I'd also like a cameo appearance from Jar-Jar because I really am curious as to what happened to him. Maybe him getting some character development in terms of his regret in inadvertently having Palpatine rise to power, and perhaps through him, Luke and Leia learning more about their father. Maybe Leia growing to pity him, and Luke just being shocked at what happened to his father. I'd also love them to, instead of dealing with the Sith (because it's kind of been resolved), deal with the remnants of the Empire and perhaps discontent within their own ranks instead. And sort of have it mature a little more because I have a feeling that people who've seen the PT and OT -- well, we've grown older now. It only makes sense that these films get older as well, without losing the heart of Star Wars.
In terms of beyond even that -- well, I would love to have a KOTOR movie adaptation (if only to prove, "Fuck you, Uwe Boll; video game adaptations don't have to suck!") just to give some more neat backstory on the Republic. I would also love a spin-off movie (assuming they're still going with that) detailing the X-Wing pilots (hell, perhaps we'll get a chance to adapt Aaron Allston's X-wing books to screen! I mean, that would be fantastic) as well as the villains such as Palpatine (I mean, seriously, that would be awesome), Count Dooku, General Grievous, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Padme. Sort of detailing stuff like Palpatine's Start of Darkness, Dooku's disillusionment with the Republic and eventual fall, Grievous' fall, Han's story, Chewbacca's story, Padme's rise to power, etc. Also, a Boba Fett movie detailing what he was doing after AOTC (because his story is never really resolved in ROTS. We don't get an answer as to what he was doing up until his first appearance in ESB. The movie can detail his jobs and end with him getting a summons from Vader to find Luke). I mean, I know I definitely got hyped about the idea of a spin-off movie and assuming they're still going with that, I'm really excited about what they could do with it.
In fact, I think it goes with all of the sequel trilogy. I just hope that Abrams and Disney both manage to do it. Either way...well, I'm excited-nervous. That's the best I can describe it as.

WooT Yes, let's hope for this! Haha, just for a pat on the shoulder to EU fans, could the movie make Han and Leia childless, and thus all the angst of the EU not happen to them? That would be fun.

I am huge fan of special effects, with heart; for example the double sunset with Luke in ANH, the music, everything adding up to this young person yearning for change. Who can't relate to that?
*This*. Seriously, it was one of those things that left a tremendous impact on me when I first saw it. It still does to this day. I think it's definitely special effects like that -- and not just special effects for the sake of special effects -- that I love as well.
And that's a very interesting idea. It could definitely work!

I mostly just ignore everything New Jedi Order or after. It stopped feeling like Star Wars, and a lot of characters were ruined. Not all the earlier books are great, but the general storylines were good, and they all felt like they belonged in the Star Wars universe.
Karen as Mara would be nice, even if she's probably too young. Then again, I don't think they're going to adapt anything from the current EU. Its going to have to be set a ways in the future because otherwise the actors are all too old.

And yeah, that's very true. Leia's definitely more of a hands-on person than anything else. Sort of takes after both her parents in that regard, I think.
And yeah, exactly. It really didn't feel like Star Wars; it felt like...well, it felt like a massive misinterpretation of what Star Wars really was. And yeah, the earlier books weren't perfect and could get a little goofy at times (some instances in Darksaber, for example), but they really at least tried to keep the feeling of Star Wars and the sense of fun. Then it got into the NJO era and while there were some highlights...yeah, it really did feel like they sort of did a lot of character assassination.
And that's definitely a good point. I confess I didn't think of that. Maybe they're going to discard the EU entirely and write their own story? Sort of doing a complete reboot? (I know it's technically a reboot already, but even so, I will admit I am a bit nervous about this)
