Got this off the Jedi Newsletter

http://star-wars.suvudu.com/2011/11/del-rey-spectra-50-page-fridays-drew-karpyshyn.html

I'll freely admit I'm a little torn on this one. On the one hand, I like the relationships between Revan and T3, Revan and Bastila, Revan and Canderous, etc. here. But on the other...*sighs* I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just have a bad feeling about this. That's all.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Feh, I'm not bothering to read it.

I'm sick and tired of others trying to speak for me. No, I never wondered what happened after Kotor. I have an imagination and can think for myself. I don't need to spoon fed.

She says her Revan was female and she goes along with this shit?

I got one thing to say: Skyrim.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Also I'm not discussing this book because I don't want to give it any more publicity.

[identity profile] kinofsimon.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a plan.

The whole thing is just hype. I'm just going to wait for fans to pull their heads out of their asses one day and stop playing TOR.

I have a few friends who are playing Skyrim, and so far they like it. Only mildly enjoyed Oblivion, so I'm opting out of Elder Scrolls.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No shit, right? It's not even worth discussing, really.
The hype must from a lot of pissed off reactions from us old fans. They must be desperate to sell Tor to newcomers because of how many people are walking away.

TES is a certain style that appeals to certain people. But the TES team listens to their fans.
Everything that was wrong with Oblivion they fixed in Skyrim. It's more like an earlier tes, Morrowind. It's grittier, more realistic than Oblivion. It's so awesome that it's keeping my attention off this Tor shit.

[identity profile] kinofsimon.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
....That is a good point. About diehard fans walking away, and them trying to sell to n00bies.

Gotcha, gotcha. My only beef with TES series is the combat system. If I want an RPG where I can control specific actions of my character, I'll play Mass Effect or Diablo 2. Not to bash on TES too much, but the combat, IMO, is a haphazard point-and-click-hack-and-slash. But thats just me, its neat otherwise.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
They even said as much, trying to make it appealing to a wide a range as possible.

The combat is much improved, much much improved, nothing like Oblivion. They've included dual wield, and the moves look much better. You have to think out what kind of attack you want to carry out, or block. They even have the graphic cut scenes of killing blows.

Good plan, eldritch. :) I also heard about SKYRIM and I think it's quite promising.

And yeah, I know what you mean. *Sighs* I mean, there are some parts that are salvageable, IMHO (Revan/Bastila, Revan + T3, Revan + Canderous), but honestly, I don't think that REVAN is really necessary. Jesus Christ, Karpyshyn; leave KOTOR the hell alone. I mean, let them have whatever Revan they want; don't force it (no pun intended) down our throats. I really doubt anyone was asking for REVAN -- except maybe the continuity freaks, but...continuity freaks will be continuity freaks. 'Nuff said. :/

Skyrim is awesome. It's making up for all the shitty disapointments I've had over KOTOR over the past couple of years.

THIS

And I'm sick and tired of it.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty awesome. :) *Sighs* And thanks. :) Seriously, though, they should have released KOTOR III first and then added in the MMO as a little tie-in, especially considering the broad focus it's allegedly going to have. And claiming it's not only KOTOR III but KOTOR IV, V, VI or whatever they said...argh! *Facepalms*

And the matter of REVAN...I got so psyched when I heard that the Exile and T3 were going to be included. But considering the Exile's fate in the MMO...I just wish they'd left the Exile alone now. :/ It just feels like a big "fuck you" to Obsidian for something that was *beyond their control*, as well as a big *fuck you* to the audience's intelligence (hardcore fans and casual newcomers' alike).

Bottom line, the MMO and its tie-ins are just a big ball of broken. 'Nuff said. :/ *Uses Luke/Vader icon to make herself feel better*

* As I put it in a rant to someone else, stop that, dude; you're a professional.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome!

I just don't have an interest in the book, no matter who they include. I know Karpyshin's style, and while it might be a good read for some, it's not going to work out for me. What he did with Darth Zannah, yeah... that will be another post. I liked the Darth Bane books well enough, although they could have been done better. But using his writing style and story telling for Revan, no, I won't like it.

They can have what ever they want, but let us be free to stick with our head!canon.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense. :) What exactly about his style bugged you, per se?

And yeah, Zannah. :/ *Sighs* I haven't read RULE OF TWO and DYNASTY OF EVIL, TBH... I've only read PATH OF DESTRUCTION, probably because I was pretty depressed after all but two of the Sith are eliminated * (yeah, I'm a dork. XD). I kind of remember that Bane and Githany were two of my personal favorites, and I quite liked Rain/Zannah, but...*sighs* Shame. She definitely seemed like a promising character. And I think it would make sense that she would be the one wanting revenge against the Jedi, especially considering their accidental (at least that's what I remember) role in her friend's death. I can see her as being the impulsive, angry, vengeful apprentice, and him being the colder, more calculating one. ** At the very least, she'd be the most eager for revenge against the Jedi. But that's my two cents on the matter. #Can't wait to see your post! :D

And this, seriously. :)

* And should we or should we not chalk that one up to "Epic Fail"?

** Although obviously not charismatic or sensible, because...come on. :P

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I could tell he was rushed in his writing, and how he uses the wookipedia so much, and many errors.

Exactly on Zannah. He did not have her in character at all.

Thanks!

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. :)

I'll admit I've been using Wookieepedia for my NaNo occasionally, but not to the extent Karpyshyn has. I kind of see it as a bit of a helpful reference whenever I forget something (e.g. names, biology, flora and fauna, etc.). Call it a research library. :) I don't use it to, say, steal ideas (e.g. what you mentioned about the Vaapaad and the Sith stealth ship *)
though. And thanks. :)

* And I can picture Mace Windu phoning Karpyshyn because he's so pissed Karpyshyn stole his gimmick like that. XD Or going over to kick his ass. Or whatever.

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
The Wookiepedia is fine for fanfic, but for the professional? No. They are supposed to be in contact with Skywalker Ranch and they are free to go there to check on continuity issues.

The Vaapad and the Stealth ship just about... idek... I couldn't believe it...

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Good point. Honestly, the fact he didn't check on Lucas is baffling -- then again, Karpishyn's kind of...vain, should we put it? Or am I being a little harsh? :/

And yeah, I can imagine. :(

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're not being harsh. One of the problems of Bioware are the egos there, from the top game writers. I really don't care about them. And that's what I like about the The Elder Scrolls writers. It isn't all about them. They just have fun and put out the games. *seen some awesome interviews with them*

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. *Sighs* It kind of becomes obvious after Karpyshyn's whining to all and sundry on his blog about how, alas, not everyone loves TOR. (I mean, no shit, Sherlock! *) But good to know about the ELDER SCROLLS writers. #Makes note to check them out sometime. :)

* Karpyshyn, that is, not you. :)

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Karpyshin's whining really put me off.

After all the controversy of making Revan male, they should know better and expected that some people are not going to like the retcon and changes, and deal with it maturely.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
actually he was order to write rle of two in four months to replace the plaguis novel. Given the time frame he didn't do a bad job

[identity profile] coldthermistor.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
I HEARD THE DRAGON SHOUTS ARE REALLY EPIC. Any confirmation...?

[identity profile] darth-eldritch.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes! (although I haven't gone very far on the main quest and learned all the shouts)

There's so much to do in this game it's insane! And it's intense!
