Say what you will about the upcoming MMORG, but the attitudes described in the article... *Sighs* All kinds of douche, man. All kinds of douche.

I'm on the bioware forum and I get that sometimes. People doubting I'm a girl, etc. It's really obnoxious.

I was planning to post something about this when I get home later. I'm not surprised in the leastby this.
There's a coupleof points I have on this bs.

This really really surprised me. I'm not into online gaming unless you count Mario Kart Wii, but back in the day I did some table-top roleplaying and was really into console RPGs back in the days of FFVII and such. I was the only girl in my little gamer circle of friends, but the guys I gamed with always acted like they thought it was AWESOME that I played. Now I'm kind of wondering if they really meant it, if they would have been the same way if I hadn't been there in the room with them. :(

I'm sure they were sincere. I've played for many years with guys and it's always been great.
Most gamer guys are really happy to have gamer women. Only a few of them are rude.

Speaking as a girl who not only plays WoW, but whose main is a male character, people make the weirdest assumptions about female gamers. Most of the random people I pug with think I'm a guy, and this sometimes leads to them making some comments they don't realize I find offensive. Mostly, I roll my eyes and remember I'll never see them again. I guess between the fact that I have an awesome guild and the fact that I spend most of my time in fandom, a traditionally female area of geekdom, I don't usually think about the supposed oddness of a female geek.

(Aside: I thought the SW RPG was out months ago. Way to pay attention, self.)

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely good to hear. :)

And s'all right -- I don't think it'll be out in a while. (From what I heard, that is. *Shrugs*)

I'm going on record and saying that gamer/geek/nerd girls are. The. Best.

And to the ladies reading, if you've had to deal with sexual harassment and discrimination [in gaming and anywhere else] from those little boys who are compensating for having no girlfriend/inadequate genitalia/self-loathing for any reason/being a pissy little *****, then I am So. So. So. So. Sorry. Those boys have no idea how to be a real man [and in that case, how to treat a lady], and in no way represent the 'true' members of my kind who are decent, respectable gents.

...Tis all.

S'okay, simon. I know. :) *Hugs tightly*

And thank you. :)

*Hugs back*

If you want to see douche-bags of the net in action look here: http://fatuglyorslutty.com/

By some mirical I've never really had to face douche bags before, a couple of times but thats it, nothing malice or degrading. the worest attack i got acutally had the rest of the players telling him to gtfo as soon as he piped up which was nice :3

Getting it online doesnt bother me so, getting it IRL is what gets me. Like the other week when someone in a GAME store complerely blanked/back to me' and went to my bf trying to flog him a kienit for the xbox. Then again the deer-in-headlights look you get when you speek up and start talking extremely knowledgeable and enthuastical about what they're going to flog is awesome!

Icon for the link-reaction, not you. :)

That really does sound cool. :) #Wishes she could have that happen IRL.

Erm. The attitude itself irritating as fuck, but I find that typically people who make that comment are being tongue-in-cheek.

People in the City of Heroes communities make similar comments. FEMALE people in the City of Heroes communities make similar comments. Not all stereotype-based humor is borne out of an inherent hatred of the group being stereotyped- and, if anything, the group being stereotyped here is gamers, not women.

Just my own two cents. Mostly because I think this should be reserved for the more obnoxious stuff, of which there is plenty.

[identity profile] merlewhitefire.livejournal.com 2011-09-12 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
This, incidentally, is in reference specifically to the comment that "only guys like "

GODDAMMIT LJ WITH YOUR NONEXISTENT-TAG PARSING
