I admit I haven't read Splinter of the Mind's Eye, but you bring up a very good point about how fic writers explore the aftereffects of the events of the stories. It's one of many reasons that fanfiction is awesome. I mean, canon doesn't always explore the aftereffects, and fanfiction is really good at filling in the blanks.
