Firefly, erm, well, I have a review of the show on my journal (still haven't seen the movie), tagged with such stuff as "firefly," "joss whedon," and "engine intake kick." Basically, there's a lot that I like about Firefly, but also a lot that I dislike, and just to warn you, I get pretty harsh with the stuff that I dislike. Fair warning: I'm going to be diplomatic here ... not so much in the review.
I ... do not like Mal. He often acts like a jerk and does morally questionable things, but unlike Jayne, he is hardly ever called out for it, and when he is called out, it's generally for his lesser infractions. (Thus, the "engine intake kick" tag.)
I don't dislike River, but most of the time, she comes off to me more as a plot device than an actual character.
There's a lot of good stuff in the show: the dialogue is great, the humor usually works well, the plots often very good, and the narratives often subvert the general expectations (though that makes it all the more glaring when they pretend to subvert expectations and then play them straight). I guess I would say that when it succeeds, it does so very well, but when it fails, it fails hard.
