Gakked from slinkslowdown

  • MegaUpload - Closed.
  • FileServe - Closing, does not sell premium.
  • FileJungle - Deleting files. Locked in the U.S..
  • UploadStation - Locked in the U.S..
  • FileSonic - the news is arbitrary (under FBI investigation).
  • VideoBB - Closed! Will disappear soon.
  • Uploaded - Banned in the U.S. and the FBI went after the owners who are gone.
  • FilePost - Deleting all material (will leave executables, pdfs, txts)
  • Videoz - Closed and locked in the countries affiliated with the USA.
  • 4shared - Deleting files with copyright and waits in line at the FBI.
  • MediaFire - Called to testify in the next 90 days and it will open doors. Pro FBI
  • Org Torrent - Could vanish with everything within 30 days “he is under criminal investigation”
  • Network Share mIRC - Awaiting the decision of the case to continue or terminate Torrente everything.
  • Koshiki - Operating 100% Japan will not join the SOPA / PIPA
  • Shienko Box - 100% working China / Korea will not join the SOPA / PIPA
  • ShareX BR - group UOL / BOL / iG say they will join the SOPA / PIPA
"Criminal investigation"...I really don't like the sound of that. :/

Seriously, is it just me, or is this turning into the Norsefire government from V For Vendetta with every passing moment?

I find the whole thing very depressing.

[identity profile] theonlymeyouget.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Quiet, or they'll black-bag you too.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

[identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I hate how this year is starting for fandom. :(

Heck, not only fandom. This is all so depressingly arbitrary... I can't even! :(

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I know. :( *Hugs*

[identity profile] sith-romantic.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
What? OMG. I must admit I haven't read anything regarding the situation before, but, well, for me ImageShack failed to work yesterday.

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it is. And there was a response for that.

People should not fear their government. Government should fear its people.

For the record, sendspace.com seems to be working.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a relief (regarding sendspace).

BTW, just did a wiki background check on the guy who implemented this bill, Lamar Smith...apparently SOPA isn't an isolated incident for him.

*Sighs*

What do you suggest we do, if only to further combat SOPA? I know it sounds like a silly question, but...what do you think? :)

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Pirates will always find a way, that's a given. The problem, as you know, is that pirates aren't the target - control of the general public has always been the agenda. People are cattle to the eyes of those on top. It's Cleopatra's advice to Caesar - "first you take what they give you, then take a little more, then a little more, until eventually you have it all."

What to do about it is far from a silly question. If anything, it's the most important question of all, and to answer it with an equal response to the problem is to risk being branded insane, social ridicule or scorn, exile, and/or probably jail time. It's one I've been asking myself every morning for a couple of decades now because this situation isn't anything new. You keep working within the system to change it at every level - local / city is every bit as important as Federal because those politicians are moving up under the radar. And since all systems collapse by nature, when the unthinkable occurs, we can either choose to stay within it, or we can rebel. V for Vendetta, Star Wars, and a number of other speculative fictions paint a pretty good picture of what that entails. History paints an even better picture (Rome, Nazi Germany, etc.). To quote Obi-Wan, "you must do what you think is right, of course."

How's that for a non-answer?

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing arbitrary about it. The anchor points for the net were hung generations ago. Now they're just starting to pull the net tight enough for the average citizen to see.

[identity profile] esper-aroon.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I think about it, the scarier this gets... Worrisome.

However, have you heard of ACTA? It's basically the same as SOPA/PIPA, but more international (the U.S., EU, Japan, China (?), several other countries). I found out about this today and reposted the thread to my journal. It's apparently been going on for quite a long time and very few people seem to know of it. Please spread the word!

Oh, you had it already! Blind me. -_-'

Interesting list ... demonoidDOTme is still working.

[identity profile] jettakd.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The MegaUpload thing is getting suspicious as hell. Turns out they were planning to start a legitimate music store ala iTunes where 90% profits go to the artists INSTEAD of Universal Music Group and the prices are cheaper for users. I'm not some tin-hatter, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the UMG sponsored raid happened right before this new store was released.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit. 0.0.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Good answer for a non-answer, I say. :)

For now, I'm going to do whatever I can -- contact my representatives, get the word out, etc. Because in the end, it's the best I can do.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link. Definitely going to be spreading the word.

[identity profile] jettakd.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said, it could be coincidence, but since there are sooo many huge pirating sites, I find it suspicious that UMG wanted the blood of this one specifically.

[identity profile] ladyhadhafang.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
It *is* pretty creepy.

[identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't make it any less arbitrary, IMO.

[identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Pirates will always find a way, that's a given.

True. And I hold onto the belief that we, who are not pirates, will always find a way too.

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's really the best any of us can do at this stage. Get actively involved, and get others actively involved.

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* We will. We learn by their example sometimes, scary as that sounds.

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't heard this, but it DOES sound like somebody snuffing out competition. Interesting...

[identity profile] forcewatcher.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Seems that way, but trust me - it's a planned and targeted type thing. It has to be when that much money is being tossed around to make it happen. But in a way, that makes it easier on us because it means there's a pattern to stop.
