Title: Another Time, Another Dyad

Summary: In which the Dark Side ultimately makes a different choice.

Prompt: Magic

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

The Force works in mysterious ways, it’s been told.

Force Bonds can come about through multiple instances. In the case of the Jedi Exile, she formed multiple bonds unconsciously, only made worse following her trauma at Malachor V that left her at first without the Force…then forming a wound in it.

There was Revan and Bastila, for another, their Bond formed via an act of altruism.

Sith Dyads were different.

The Dyad had existed from the beginning of time, as old as the Dark Side of the Force, and worshipped in the Sith Order as something sacred, something deep — more of a spiritual connection than anything else. Nothing inherently romantic about it necessarily — it could form between Master and apprentice, parent and child, anyone available. There had been attempts to force a connection; Palpatine had tried to force one with his own creation, Anakin Skywalker, to keep him under his control.

The Dark Side, of course, did not allow that. Palpatine had done enough, the Dark Side reasoned. It had been disgusted enough when Palpatine practiced wanton cruelty in his youth, when it failed to stop Palpatine’s non-consensual impregnation via the Force of Shmi Skywalker. The Dark Side was not inherently an evil force; evil was not formed by a mystical energy shield but impulses, prejudices and choices. The cruelties of sentient beings made the Dark Side what it was, in the end.

(It had been so long before the Dark Side Itself knew what it had originally been)

It did not connect Rey Palpatine (later Skywalker) to Ben Solo in this universe. It did in another, but here — the two were too far apart in life experience. A baby did not need to be chained to a ten year old against her will, to be responsible for him ultimately. She was already too much of a victim of Palpatine’s greed and his refusal to admit he lost his own battle. That he was done in by his hubris and sadism.

Poe Dameron had been born atop a Sith Temple. In this universe, a son of war heroes was connected to another son of war heroes.

Who better to link than two people who trusted and loved each other?
